I used to have this saddle a few yrs ago and I have to say thats when my position was at its best!! Have heard they arent great for the horse though? Bearing in mind I have a good saddle fitter reguarly and always wear a prolite pad as a rule under all my saddles.

Any views greatly appreciated

I have one and love it! Im quite short 5'2" and close contact jumping saddles all left my lower leg in a funny position! Would be interested to hear why they are bad for horses though?

I havent heard that they are bad for the horse - the only thing I can think of is they are quite heavy but bearing in mind the size of your horse that should hardly be a prob. i personally found them a bit hard on the bum!!

The older ones are incredibly hard on the rear end, like sitting on a hard church pew!! Also check the panels, they tended to be overflocked so a bit like rolling pins. I hear the new ones are a bit better but, by and large, I'd not bother with Stubben.

I loved my Seigfried II, a bit hard without a seat saver but I had the panels reflocked, and my horse jumped beautifully in it. My old advanced eventer went round Blenheim clear in it and never had a back problem!

PS it's still lovely and if anyone is interested in buying it PM me please - it's very cheap to a good home and in good condition.

I've heard about the back thing but I sj and evented in one and my horse never had a bad back. I think its because the panels have quite a small weight bearing panel at the back and the gullets are quite narrow. Also I did find the seat pretty hard but it was a very secure saddle to ride in.

I had an old green spot siegfried which both I am my horse went brilliantly in. Swapped it for a Bates 4 months ago and it's been all donwhill from there - horse now has sore back and no longer jumps :-( ! Needless to say I am now swapping back - hopefully getting my old siegfried back tonight and can't wait! So IMO that blows the fact that they are bad for the back out of the window...

I love my stubben. Horse doesn't have a bad back with it and I find it comfy (it is one of the new ones) and very secure.

The only downside to it is that it is quite heavy, but as I am about 10stone and he is 16.3 with 10.5" bone I don't think it's really going to matter!

I have one, had it for a few years now, and i love it!
Bought it off my instructor coz i kept getting jumped out of the saddle cross-country and once i had it never happened again, made me feel very secure. Comes highly recomended!

Only warning is they are a bit hard on the bottom (as Joss knows from riding in mine :p) but your bum will adjust to it after a while!

Interesting. I also have a Siegfried 2, very old, and absolutely LOVE it. It's a flat seat, v forward cut, and fits me brilliantly as I have quite a long leg hip to knee (though I do agree the seat is like sitting on a plank of wood, not exactly cushioned, and it is heavy too). I felt that it gave me a very secure seat xc. However, after a break from horses, when I got back into it, my saddler also said they were out of fashion as they have very narrow panels and as someone said above can be like rolling pins. With my last horse I wore it with a prolite to try to reduce this effect, but she said it doesn't fit either of my two now. I bought a Patriot to replace it, which is a close contact. Now if I look at xc photos I feel that I can't get my bum far enough back in the saddle, and my lower leg slips back more easily. Everyone tells me that the Patriot is the better saddle, but I long to be able to ride in my stubben again

It's in the cupboard for when I have a horse it fits again!! And I do wonder if a narrow built horse, who would look "oval" in a cross section rather than circular, is really better in a saddle with really wide fat panels?
