I bought 100cm, measured it today as I've not been able to get it done up and presumed it was due to Fatty getting fatter and so I'd need to buy another and needed to know what size to get. It measured at 95cm (I just checked my original order email now to see where I bought it from to buy another and that's when I noticed the size I'd ordered originally)
I only ever wash it on a 30 degree wash and a gentle spin (800 I think?)
It used to do up on 3rd hole up each side, now it doesn't reach to do up. She's gained weight but I really don't think she's gained that much (and neither does the weigh tape)
Could it really have shrunk that much?!?!
It has also lost that shineyness the cords have and is quite frayed/fluffy with strands coming undone. It's not quite a year old.
Is this normal for these girths or have I just been unfortunate or washed it wrong?

I bought one years ago and it washed really well and still looks like new, although I don't use it anymore. You've either been unlucky, or the quality isn't as good now, or your horse has put on a few kg. Weigh tapes are funny things, just positioning them slightly differently can give you a different reading.

I think that machine washing is too harsh. I have always washed these by hand in cool water with very little soap and then use a little fabric conditioner. I hang them up to dry naturally. You could pull them back to length when they are damp. The cross cords do tighten with washing and the long cords eventually go fluffy and shrink. They do need looking after very carefully I find. I have some girths that are years old. They are showing their age but are still useable.

Mijods, yep, that's the one :)
DAMS - shes definitley put weight on since last October so that wont be helping. However her 110cm girth is ginormous on her and too big really, by my reckoning she should still fit in 100, maybe 105. If it's measured at 95 I'm not surprised it doesn't do up.
I didn't measure it when I got it but the box definitely said 100 and if it wasn't then I'd have been surprised if I could have got it done up ever if it's always been that small (it used to go up to 3rd hole each side - even allowing for some weight gain it seems a big change to now not even be close to being able to buckle it up?) Maybe she has just got fatter than I thought :(
Meredith - they are advertised/described as being machine washable on the stubben site (That was part of the attraction of it!) I always stretch it and leave it hung up to dry after washing. However I guess it must just be too much of a vigorous cycle as it sounds like it's gone the way you've described. Does hand washing bring them up clean enough (she is a grubby wotsit and everything gets covered in grease quite quickly)

I remember laying these girths out in a shop to measure against one I already owned. There were 3 all supposedly the same length -only they weren’t!

I usually wash the girths, before the mud and sweat dries, after every use. Occasionally after 2 rides. I just rinse them, rub the cords through my hands using the soap, rinse, then use conditioner.

Yes they do shrink I have about 5 all different lengths. Now I have a white one which I hand wash carefully and leave to dry and it comes up like new.

I have two of these a couple of inches different in length to allow for seasonal fluctuations in the belly size 😋. I always chuck them in the washing machine but in a wash bag and no more than 30”. I don’t find they shrink significantly and seem to cope well with no special care, I just use normal washing stuff too. They soon give slightly again and I like that they are so easy to keep clean.

I have had a Stubben one for 6 months now, super quality and cured the problems i was having with previous girths. Stubben do a video about its care have a look, mine is hand washed twice a week in the sink in hand warm water with a splash of fairy liquid, thoroughly rinsed wrung dryish by hand and layed to dry, i lay it out measure it to its original length and leave to air dry, the instructions say DONT hang to dry or it will stretch, does not say anything about shrinking , i suggest you wash it stretch it to required size lay it flat, or hang it with a little weight on it to its required size and allow to dry, should cure your problem, sounds like a lot of messing about, it's not, and its' worth the few minutes it takes.

I recommend them and not heard of drastic shrinkage from any of my customers who have them.

Is this the girth that looks like the old-fashioned nylon girths of yesteryear that we all had (us oldies anyway LOL) at pony club all those years ago?

Just wondering, as they're supposed to be good, and apparently (or so I've heard) nothing like the awful nylon version.

Yes, and they are nylon, for a long time I would read that they are mohair but they're not. They're lovely girths, plaited cords unlike the 70s pony versions, which gradually pull tighter and thinner meaning you have good grip over about 3 holes' adjustment in many cases. There are mohair versions from a US company but I read a convincing negative (which I've forgotten the details of) in using mohair.

Is yours a brown one, by any chance? I love a cord girth, and have a few in all three colours. The black and white ones wash fine. The brown ones are a law unto themselves. I have one that’s gotten v.hairy and is significantly shorter than it used to be!

Mine is indeed a brown one. I've ordered another in 105cm as that should be more than generous.
I will definitely measure this one straight from the box and try a different washing/drying technique as that sounds like where I might have gone wrong!

Mine are brown and I have 3 which are now all different lengths. I hang them up to dry, but they have definitely not stretched!
