I managed to get into a gorgeous stubble fields tonight, Fun much!!

But I've missed the chance with every other one so far, they have only been stubble for a day or two at max.
Never noticed they were ploughed so quickly before, does anyone know why they are ploughing so quickly? I don't know anything about agriculture, is it late, why the rush?

Nice farmer to give you permission. If it has only just been combined it is very late and they will be wanting to get the next lot of autumn sown seed in.

they're the fields on our livery yard farm, the YO rides on them herself and is fine with us riding on them :) lucky I know, just will have to make the most of the one left as stubble while its here.

Our stubble fields never stay that way for long either, though our farmer does tend to leave the odd field open for us over the winter.

As we have had a late spring this year many have found they are doing the spring harvest and summer harvest at the same time so to speak. We've got a bit behind so where as the stubble fields are usually left for a bit they have been ploughed near enough straight away to ensure the next crop is planted in time.

Because of the terrible winter and cold spring, the harvest was quite late. Planting time for rape is late August, for winter cereals is mid September onwards. So the farmers are trying to get next year's crops in at the optimum time to get them growing well and that means clearing the fields of the straw and then cultivating and making a seed bed to replant.

So it is true that there hasn't been much of a gap between harvest and planting. Some fields for spring crops won't be planted, but even these will probably be culitivated to try and get rid of weeds.

It is a busy time of year!

Thank you, that does make sense now, the field that is stubble at the minute was replanted I believe because it was ruined with flooding.
Hopefully I'll be able to get another couple of rides in :).
Hopefully next yrs weather is a bit more helpful.
