My Border Collie is the most food orientated there possibly will ever be!

He's a total sweetheart in all respects apart from walking off the lead :/ If he catches sight of another dog / person/ car or anything hes off and like hell is he coming back. This is obviously dangerous with roads etc. I've tried turning around and running in the opposite direction - he catches up and runs straight past.. and calling in different tones etc and my latest approach is when he comes back he has to sit and he gets a treat . But not sure this is the best way forward..

What would you do?

Besides tying him to something very heavy

Your doing the best possible thing with the sit and a treat.
One small suggestion, soon as he gets back to you give him a treat then ask for a sit and give him another.
Only reason i say this is dogs are simple and he will think that you are giving him a treat for the sit and wont recognize that he is getting the treat for coming back.
Also if you are putting him back on the lead don't give him a treat until you have his lead clipped on.

if he gets a reward for coming when you call him I don't think that is a bad thing. Keep the treat small though. I used to cook liver til it went hard and cut that up into little pieces. They love it. Problem I had with my first rottie was she had no interest in food whatsoever and just bogged off!!

Thanks,

least i feel more on the right path now haha. He's got these teenie tiny square beef things so wont make him fat

And thanks Rubysurfer, that makes perfect sence to give him the treat, THEN make him sit and then give him another . Shall give it a goo

if it makes you feel any better, I have the same problem, but my collie is NOT food orientated! so I end up just having to make a total t*t out of myself to get him back to me!!! (surrounding people also find it entertaining!)

Hope these ideas work for you

If using treats is working, then keep using them!

I can sypathise, having possibly the most stubborn dog you're ever likely to meet. She is very food orientated, but once she's at the park she couldn't care less about anything you have to offer. She'll quite happily run to the other side of the park (completely out of sight) to sniff a certain piece of grass, and won't come back, no matter how much of a fool I make of myself.

I've been told it comes with the breed (Chow), and having exhausted every method I can think of with no effect, I'm resigning myself to the fact that I have a dog that will probably never recall. Very fraustrating...

I would suggest maybe trying long lining for a little while while you are perfecting the treat giving, just as suggested above, let him/her mull at the end of the line, then call/whistle then when she approaches treat and encourage to go off again to the end of the line, not for every walk, but just for some small training exercises and maybe introduce a cue like a clicker or whistle, so u can get her attention from a distance.
Also stick to 1 treat for the exercise, a delicasey she/he can assosiate with this exercise only.

Chimo (a british inuit) is like that. she knows exactly what i mean when i say "Chimo come" and if she has a lead on - even a long one she comes straight away, unclip the lead and she is off...... have even tried it at school (inside) leaving the lead on, but not holding it and she still comes, but dont want her to trip up outside. bloney dogs!
