Hi guys has anyone ever used one of these? Desperate for some reviews as interested in one for my youngster who is a nightmare with Haynets! Thanks in advance
I gave them a go but they were a PITA. The plastic triangle thing that comes with them to keep hay/haylage sliding to front was constantly bending/ collapsing, and they were a b*gger to clean out - hay seed constantly stuck because you can't get it out over the bottom metal rail and always got beneath plastic thing that was really difficult to get out without trapping/ scraping fingers and bruising ribs on iron bar edge. The horses soon learnt how to flip the stubbs buckets out and access forage that way so buckets had to be tied on (and then untied and retied everyday to refill) and I had one horse who flatly refused to use the station (he was on hay and found it just too awkward to get out). Finally I couldn't quite get as much haylage in as I wanted anyway. The only way I think they *might* work would be to mount entirely off the ground (assuming wall strong enough and not enough room to get hoof stuck under, but enough room to get a brush under to clear out scraps of old hay/ haylage) forgo the stupid plastic triangle and allow hay/haylage to drop down to floor - this would mean no stuck hayseed in bottom, and a more natural eating position if they hoovered from the bits coming out bottom (they tended to turn heads at angle and yank to get haylage from between bars). All in all though imo a great idea that doesn't quite work and just not worth it! Mine were ripped out and chucked after persevering for ages (I felt guilty because of how long it took my long suffering dad to fit; they were a pita to get on slightly wonky old walls and had to have bits of wood wedged behind parts of a couple!) luckily I didn't pay much for them as found a supplier looking to get rid (should have known really!). I love the full length hay corner racks you can get fitted in internal stabling though, they work a treat .
Thanks. I know he'd be a pain with a haybar and feeding from the floor is not an option as he's a stinky dirty beasty :/ think I'm going to take a gamble and try one xx
I have one. Most of the time it is fine. Only use for feeding hay. Bucket feed from floor. I have mine fitted a few inches off the floor and do a sweep out with dust pan and brush. It works better with long cut, course, hay, rather than short wispey hay, as you can pull it through to start it off ( if that makes sense). Be careful with size of horse hoof, as in gap underneath and between bars. I dont use with my shetland as I would be scared of feet getting stuck.
