I'm old fashioned and stuck in my ways have always had old stubben saddles love them have ridden in 3 varying width old seigfried models for years.
Now my 28 / 29 / 30 width have always fitted everything i've needed to ride but well my new lad has to be the exception were not even close! He is a 15'1 Long backed american paint horse looks like a lean mean TB with extra muscles :-) but he has huge shoulders and very wide withers my 30width is perched on him now to the best of my knowledge stubbens widest saddle is a 32? XW which i assum is more of a wide as i find my stubbens come up tight fitting in comparrison to other saddles. I am strugling to find a 2nd hand 32 width does anyone have an old one. I dont show so doesnt need to be nearly new.
I think i have been spoilt in the past as my 3 saddles cost between £60 and £150 and have all been in good condition and i have kept them this way. but am really strugling to find one in a wider fit to try on my new chunky monkey. i have also had the pleasure of riding in the hdr event and would consider one fo these too but am not as familiar with thier fit.

Kit Kats and foxes classics out the cupboard for all :-)

Whereabouts are you? I have a stubben in the garage that I used on my old loan cob. I can measure it if it helps? Where do I measure.

I'm running to hide in the garage before the get a saddle fitter out, forget the make get the right saddle to fit your horse type messages arrive :-)

Stubbens are stamped on the girth guards under the saddle flaps with a number between 27 and 32, i ahve alot of experience with saddles and i do have them adjusted to fit by the saddle fitter but i need something in the right ball aprk first and nothing i have even comes close and ive tried several others hes just such an unusal width for a fine built horse so rounder cob saddles are no good as hes not a flat backed cob just a chunky wihtered TB build. stubbens have alwys suited my horses and i know i can ride well in them i've tried many saddles which i am not comfortbale in as i have a deofrmed hip and very long legs and most just dont suit me and id rather bareback than ride in them lol. theres tonnes of medium narrow stubbens for sale in my price range but i'm strugling to find a good 2nd hand wide to extra wide one to try / buy

Sorry forget to say ma based up in east leeds, i dont mind driving to collect or using my works fed-ex account and obvisouly i don't expect someone to send me the saddle without me paying for it but i obvisouy would like to be able to return and be refunded for it if not suitable i will obvisouly suffer postal costs each way. just non in local tack shops and saddlers, am a happy hacker and i can not afford made to measure or new plus as i dont show am not paying several hundered for a high end 2nd hand saddle i've never had trouble with my old stubbens and i've never had a horse with a back problem am quite experienced and check my own horse out regularly and if i have any concerns i get the pro-s out for advice and work

I think we need a tack bank as well as the bit bank HHO admin please:)

oooo a tack bank would be a god send! 15yr ago when i worked in a riding school getting your hands on a wide selection of good quality 2nd hand saddles was so easy without breaking the bank. Theres nothing available now, same with rugs and everything else i never had to stray far to find everything i wanted for a new school pony!

Hi,
Cremedemonthe has got my wide fit Stubben at the moment (I must go and get it back from him - norty Garnet!). Perhaps if he sees this thread he can look at the number on the girth guard and let you know?
He took it to bits and there is a problem with the seat webbing, which is not worth me repairing as I don't have a use for it anymore. However if you can make use of it and are willing to fund the repairs, then you can have it.

Thanks for looking Jules 30 is the widest ive ever needed before but poor tea is such an unusal fit he doesnt even fit in my quarter horse western saddle! am actually going to have to look at a draught fit one for him which sounds so silly when hes such a skinny looking devil my last spanish cross quarter horse looked much chunkier than him its odd how deceptive he is i must figure out how to get some pics up and i will show off his freakishly larger withers lol
Thanks for the offer i will certainly take a look at that saddle garnet i have a fed-ex ac so will happily have it collected always worth a look and i'm lucky to be with in half hour of good old foxes of wetherbys saddlers :-) they made a fair few alterations for my last filly who had an odd shaped head lol one of these days i will buy a nice regular shaped horse!

OK, I've phoned Oz and he can't see a number on the buckle guards of my Stubben - most of the writing has worn off. However, I have arranged to go and collect my saddle on Friday and Oz will check the width on his measuring gadget then. I'll take some photos to show you and then you can decide if you want to try it.
Hold fire until Friday!

Thanks Garnet thats very helpful of you much appreciated, im fine for time evil weather has turned again and as i only have a grass school won't be doing much again this week and were only at the sitting on stage now just need something for when he goes for backing as am sure david wont want to be doing bareback like me

I have a very old 18" Stuben Siegfried saddle, been sat in my wardrobe unused for about 12yrs,
Measures 8" from D ring to D ring, and has the numbers 295 stamped on one girth guard and
B11638 on the other.
If its any use let me know. x

Thanks for the offer but 8"dd sounds too narrow think its nearer a medium than a wide but many thanks for looking i am grateful

Not only are Stubben sizes pretty narrow, but the points are long even in the wider sizes, and not generally suitable for horses with wide withers who need shorter points. Also the trees are generlaly curvy front to back, and not all gullets (channel from front to back) aer very wide. Most Appy/Paint/type horses are pretty flat from front to back in my experience.

sbloom, thanks for that sbloom i normaly have arab spanish quarter horses cross as well as riding lots of hunter an tb types in my younger days and have always been fine with stubbens. i may have to start looking at other saddles then for this lad am most disstraught he doesn't even fit in my FQHB western! so i really have nothing for him. Due to my own physical shape as well ive always found the stuben and hdr event/jump type saddles are very easy for me to ride in.
if anyone has any recomendations for alternative saddle i will check local saddlers and see if they have anything else im intrested in trying as i want my horse to be comofrtable but at the same time pointles me buying a saddle i can't ride in (e.g wintecs which dont cater for lankey legs lol)
