What are the factors that determine a horse is a certain breed and belongs in a certain stud book. I have just bought an Oldenburger, I would have assumed he was a warmblood but when I look at his breeding all his sires side are TB, his dam was an Oldenburger and the rest were Hanovarians/TB? (his sire being Seigneur d'Alleray xx, and international dressage horse :D)

My zangersheide is a mix of holsteiner (sire Nelson Z), KWPNs and trakenners etc. May be a numpty question but just interested as to why a horse may be placed under a certain stud book when the bloodlines are all of different breedings (I am pretty sure Zangersheide isn't a breed anyway- thats just a stud book name).

Thanks

Generally it only takes one parent already registered with the stud book to qualify the progeny in the same stud book (with some limitations). Most studs/types allow different breeds in as 'improvers', particularly if fashion or commerial interests dictate that slightly lighter/heavier/athletic/compact is what is successful at any particular time.

I know Wiki can be a bit hit and miss, but for a summary of the development of Oldenburg horses see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostfriesen_and_Alt-Oldenburger
