Quick question really, can a dog that has been used as a stud live happily as a family dog? Are they just too full of testosterone and dominant to be happy or should they always be neutered first.
I do appreciate it depends on the dog and the family to a fair extent but just wondering if anyone had any experience. My last two boys were entire and very laid back, but never used for stud. Does it make a difference?

Friends jrt was fine and lived normally with the bitches in the house. But that was how he was brought up.

Our whippet boy's dad is a lovely chap. He lives with other dogs and bitches (including our lad's mum) and he's just lovely. The breeder has a gorgeous photo of him curled up on the sofa snoozing in a pile with his 'wife' and one of their daughters.

quick answer...of course it can. People have entirely the wrong idea of dogs that have been used at stud being changed feral beasts....they are normal dogs, nothing different about them and fit in just the same as any other dog.

Having just used as a stud dog a family dog bred by myself, his owner is delighted he seems more settled about life ,no more worrying about he knows not what! None of my lads ever goes off his food over bitches in season, they just do their job and return to normal life, sensible things!

I owned an ex stud dog, a Whippet. He was a marvellous boy indoors and out generally, but he could be a bit free and easy with peeing in new places:o
