Hi

I have been thinking about putting my mare to stud within the next 18 months so never having done this before I am gathering all the info I can before I make a final decision .

She is a cob x fell 15h and I think I would like to put her to a welsh sec D

How does this work and any ideas of the price I can expect to pay....have been looking online but no one gives prices or much info on precedure.

Many thanks

depends on whether you decide to go for natural covering or a.i. the latter is more expensive, but i do not know whether Welsh Sec D stallion owners are happy to let their stallions cover naturally. (comp stallions, v valuable stallions, are usually restricted to a.i.)
mare would need swabbing by your vet before you started.
if you can choose natural covering, either mare might run in field with stallion, or you could walk mare in to stallion on fertile days if you know when she's in season. otherwise, prob easier to keep her at the stud for a month or two until she takes - keep out at grass is usually approx £25 a week, ish.
if a.i., this can usually be done at the stud or at an a.i. centre.
http://www.stallionsonline.co.uk/category.php?c=224 has Sec D stallions, the ones i looked at were £400 and £300 stud fee.
so, as a very very rough idea i doubt it would cost less than £500 to get her in foal, could easily be double that or more.
i spent a fortune last year to get a mare of mine in foal and she didn't take. gutting.
tbh though, unless your mare is exceptional, and/or you are breeding for yourself, breeding is for mugs, and there are enough horses around already! sorry!

Be prepared to spend a lot of money.
So far I have spent:-
Stud fee + shipping (I used AI)
Shipping again as mare didnt take first time.
Vets AI package x2 She stayed at the vets for a week each time
Extra scan in September to make sure she was still in foal
Hepes injection and vet call out x2
Blood tests as she had a swelling.

She still has to have another blood test, another herpes injection and a booster injection. I will also have the vet out once the foal is born.

I really dont want to add up how much I have spent.
Nowadays you can buy a welsh youngster for the cost of a stud fee so not always worth breeding.

Hello

I have got my first ever foal due in July - perhaps I could point you in the right direction

Stud fees vary a lot ! I used a Graded Irsh draught stallion and the stud fee was £350 you then pay for keep, I opted for grass livery so she was out with sheep and the other mares 24/7 and stayed for nearly 6 months (but it shouldn't really take that long) - The stud offered a vets package which includes all your scans to test for seasons etc and that was £200 and well worth is as 1 scan off my vet is £90 ! They also wormed her and had her feet done for me whilst she was away.

I used a small stud that was about an hour away and would recommed natural covering - you only pay them once your mare has caught (NFNF = no foal no fee NFFR = no foal free return) They will try there hardest to get her in foal as if you take her home empty then you only pay for your keep and vet which is much much better than paying to send her away for AI using seman that you have already paid for. if that doesn't work then you have to pay all over again. A friend of mine sent her mare for AI twice last year and it cost her over £1500 for 2 lots of seman and 2 weeks livery + not in foal ! Mine cost me £1090 mare in foal, 6 months keep, vet , feet, wormed etc ... you get my point.

Put a post in the breeding forum re a good section D stallion - they love hunting for them in there ! As for price you will just have to give a couple of studs a call. In fact I might just have a look for you now !

Good luck

Depends where you are in the country I know a very smart sec D stallion who is well bred and has won plenty of affiliated competitions, he has been to HOYS etc. He is the sire of my black foal in my sig. His foals have competed BSJA (1mtr+) has sired intermediate eventers and a medal winning JA pony in germany. Not many welsh cob stallions can boast a record like this one. And his stud fee is £350 he has exceptional fertility even tho he is 20 this year. He is standing in the Scottish borders. PM me if you want to know more.

So far it has cost me (this time)

My mare had a infection that cost £550 to fix (multiple trips and antibiotics)

Ai package was £340 + £60 to wash out and caslick (luckily she took first time but these costs could of been repeated if not, she also stayed home for this so didnt pay livery to stud or AI centre)

Semen was £520 + £60 collection

Regumate was £120 (not all mares need this)

More scans at 65 and 100 days (not really important but I wanted them done to check) £120

Injections for herpes £50 per time (3 needed)

And the normal livery charges that I pay for her.

Thats so far!!! There will be fairly sizable costs in sending her to foal down. The cost of the place im looking at is around £15 per day plus £200 foaling down fee. Im saving up as we speak!!!

What others have said is true though. It is time consuming, expensive, risky, you may end up with something that you would never considor buying or at worse nothing at all and there is a chance you could loose your mare.

It is rewarding though and I wouldnt change mine, but this is it after this one (that is hopefully hopefully still growing in my girlie)

Hope that helps

I have a Section D stallion who I am producing to be an FEI dressage pony for my daughter next year. His stud fee will be £300 as he will be aimed at the sports horse/pony market due to his exceptional temperament and movement. If you are looking for a show cob with more 'showing' movement - look at the listings in the back of the WPCS journal - the stud fees may be less.

Please think very carefully before putting your mare in foal. What are her good points and more importantly bad? Are you breeding for yourself or to sell on? Do you have suitable facilities for a mare and foal?

Breeding can be very rewarding but it can also be heartbreaking.

I usually estimate that it is approx £2,000 to get a foal on the ground when you factor in vet and stud fees. This does not include livery/keep costs.

There is an old saying "fools breed horses for rich men to buy"

some great points have been raised in the above posts.

when i put my mare in foal my fees were:
£600 stud fee
£350 AI package
£500 (approx)post foaling vets fee - mare had mastitis, numerous anitbiotics, painkillers, vets visits, swabs etc.

my mare never stayed at stud, she stayed a few days at the vets but they included this in the AI package plus an extra scan pre October. my mare also foaled at home on her own.

when you add it all up sometimes its not worth breeding as it can go wrong very quickly and theres no guarantee of a live foal at the end of the term
