My mini dachshund pup is due to be castrated in 3 months. He's a lovely dog with the calmest, most laid back temperament and easy to train, and a lovely colour, quite unusual. He's KC registered with a 5 generation pedigree. Here's the question. My mum absolutely loves him and is always desperate to see him (we live 200 miles away though). She used to have a border collie and doesn't have a dog at the moment but wants to get one when she starts working part time, in about 6 months or so. She has often said she's love a mini dachs, but I know she wouldn't have the money to buy one (they go for £6-700 plus). It's also quite hard to find genuine breeders with good, healthy parent stock. So I am considering delaying my pup's castration, and seeing if I can put him out to stud, just the once, in return for a puppy. Has anyone had any experience of doing this? Is it a likely option, given they are quite pricey? Have thought about getting my brother and sister to join in to buy her one but given my puppy's lovely nature, I'd like to try and pass this on for my mum's puppy. Any ideas?

You could try approaching experienced breeders, but more than likely, they'd want a proven stud i.e. from someone else who is an experienced breeder and/or a dog who is being shown/worked. Doesn't hurt to approach breeders and see what they say, though.

To add, just because your dog is a sweetie, doesn't necessarily mean his offspring will be like him. My dog is unlike any other BT I've met. She is calmer than a St. Bernard, whereas her father was a pistol through and through.

Most experienced breeders aren't likely to be keen on using a young dog without a show record (I'm presuming he hasn'tbeen shown?). If you used him on a pet bitch you wouldn't really know what was behind her breeding so no guarantee you would get a nice pup. Why don't you and your brother and sister try and get her a puppy of similar breeding instead? But have to agree they certainly have gone expensive these day, had no idea they went for that much!
