Been looking at the different feeds by different brands but it's difficult to compare as all independent sites who obviously claim theirs is the best.

So what feed do people recommend for a mare in foal due around April/May and why. What are the benefits of each one.

Thank :)

Depends a bit on the type/breeding of mare. In foal mares need a balanced feed with a bit of extra protein. If they're good doers (like my Irish Draughts) then Bailey's Stud Balancer (often at a lower rate than recommended) is perfect. A TB mare might need a bit more. But it's important to remember that OVER-feeding a pregnant mare creates even more problems than slightly under-feeding!

She's a tb x welsh 4 year old had a foal last year and was left to ruff it out so wouldn't have had a feed. The baileys stud feed would the no3 or no7 be better??

Just realised the stud balancer is totally different. :)

Winergy Equilibrium Growth.
Like eventergirl I found nearly all of mine needed less than recommended, even my previously hard to keep weight on 7/8 TB mare was great on it.
She was really ill with a mystery infection about a month after her second foal was born and lost mounds of weight and that was the only time she got the recommended amount, rest of the time needed far less. I used the Growth first and was so impressed I eventually moved over to use the Low and Senior for the working horses.
All of my foals have had it now and very pleased with their development, nice steady growth and again none needed as much as recommended so it actually works out cost-effective to feed. It is the low starch level that really attracted me to them as a range of feeds.

My welsh type is due the end of april, she has 3 mugs of baileys stud balancer with hi fi light and speedi beet. The vet said in february to add half a scoop of stud cubes to each feed the later in march up it to a scoop of cubes in each feed. Keep the weight down, dont want a fat broodmare
