what are peoples thoughts on studs and young horses?? none, one in each, behinds only?

i may take my 4yo XC schooling this autumn, or may wait until the spring, but at some point soon he will go XC so i wondered what people thought. would more studs be used, due to the young horse being unbalanced, or could studs cause more problems, interfering with natural action and natural shock absorpbing properties etc?

cheers

Definately double studs. One stud as you say unbalances the foot. If it wasn't too slippery I'd just use back studs but usually we tend to use 2 studs all round

The problem with studs is, that you could ask this question to a 1000 people and get a 1000 different answers. Personally I dont think Id use any as you'll only be doing baby jumps & I dont think it does a horse any harm to learn how to hande itself in bog! If not I d put 2 in each as IMO it balances the foot best.

you will get a different answer from everyone it really depends on your own preference!

I have had 2 in each shoe before, and also one in each....I dont bother with two per shoe anymore as it made no difference whatsoever....personally!

However, common sense says that having two would stop a shoe rotating to some degree...but then you could argue they could hurt a ligament by being so stuck in the ground and no twist!!

Its a horrible question!!

i know, people always have different preferences!!!
but just though id ask

especially for an unbalanced young horse, although, im thinking maybe none atm, just for schooling, and then studs in when he does a proper course- fingers crossed for if he ever gets that far!

i wouldn't put any in unless you are going to be turning tightly. you wouldn't put them in for hunting, for example. it does youngsters good to learn to cope with it, i think.
when competing, either two small in front (to keep foot balanced) and two behind, or one behind, to allow foot to twist... lots of horses do this, and two studs will increase shearing forces on fetlock etc.
if you are using v. big studs on firm ground, maybe two studs to keep foot balanced though.
it's a real quandary.
