Been doing some low level hunter trials with my pony... Only done a couple so far but she loves it and whizzes round. Great fun.

haven't been using studs as we were just trying out HT for fun but on Sunday at Stockland Lovell she came round a perfectly resonable corner, lost her back feet and slipped over. We were uninjured, she stood up and I remounted and we completed the course BUT obviously I need to get studs holes put in. The annoying thing is I only had her shod about 2 weeks ago. So my questions are as follows...

> is it ESSENTIAL to get stud holes in every shoe or can I get away with just asking my farrier to take the hinds off, put in stud holes, and refit... (obviously will get stud holes all round when she is next officially due for shoeing but would this be ok in the interim)

> How many stud holes do I need in each shoe. I thought it was a minimum of two but many people at my yard have only one per shoe? So some advice would be great.

thanks!

I only use studs behind when I go XC (unless the going is dire!) but I think it is personal preference. I also only have one stud hole in each shoe as my horse is extremely close behind and would injure himself with studs on the inside. You'll probably gets lots of differing opinions so the ultimate decision will come down to you anyway!!! Good luck!!

I use 2 stud in front to balance the foot and one on the outside of the backs (as he treads on himself if theyre on the inside!) Everyone has their own opinion of studding, but i would say your suggestion of just the back ones for now would be fine, better than nothing!

I only use one stud in the ouside of each hind, I have stud hole in front but only use the if the ground is VERY wet or slippery, Its personal preferance really, but your suggestion as a make do til next shoeing is good, thats all i have used for 80% of the season eventing at novice level and this season has been wet!
