OK so I've never used studs before form any of my horses but my horse slips like crazy on the roads and he's not confident on the hills because of this (and there are lots of hills around here.) I was thinking of asking my blacksmith to put in road studs. Heres the issue: I regularly jump him in the menage and am looking to start competing on him. He has never slipped on the menage under saddle (somtimes slips if playing in there on his own even fell over once) do I go for tapped holes in his shoes?? If so road studs are easy but I'm totally lost with all the other designs and how many which feet to put them on etc!! Any advice or links to a good explanation website???? Also what is the cost difference with farrier road studs and threaded holes?

Put road nails in, you shouldnt really use road studs on hard ground IMHO even with their name as they are!! So have road nails, and then if you need them for working on grass etc, have stud holes put in aswell.
