i am planning, (everything crossed!) to start to compete my lovely new horse at BSJA later on this year. practically everyone who i have talked to or heard about have talked about how they wear studs when they compete. Does this really make a difference as i am at a loss as to whether i should get the farrier to put on the special shoes on him or not, and just need a bit of advise as to how they really help when a horse is jumping!?!??! thankyou

If you are only jumping on a surface then you don't need studs. If you are going to be jumping on grass then you need to have stud holes really.

As for 'special shoes', there aren't any...... they are normal shoes but the farrier just heats them up & drives a punch through the shoes making a hole & he then taps a thread in the hole. My farrier charges 50p a hole so it doesn't cost much.

If you are jumping on grass then it is better using studs. Your horse will feel more secure, he won't slip or slide & he will be able to take off & land safely & will be able to turn much better without fear of falling.

As for wether you should have 1 or 2 studs in each shoe, well that's open to alot of debate.....we prefer 2 per shoe some prefer one. If you go to a site like Supasuds you will be able to see what the various studs are for & in what conditions to use them.

I hope this has been some use to you.

I always use studs when jumping on grass (dont need them on a surface). As above post, horse could slip without them.
If they slip it could result in a nasty accident or the horse losing confidence. For the sake of 50p per stud whole and an extra couple of mins screwing them in its definitly worth it.

Im practisiong over a couple of fences in the field this evening and i'll put studs in my horse even for a small practise.

Ive seen horses sliding into fences, slipping over round corners, getting unbalanced, jumping poorly all because they werent wearing studs. Im quite passionate about this subject because IMO its dangerous and blasai to jump on grass without them.

I would speak to your farrier and RI though as to how many studs to use, they will know whats best for your horse as it does depend as to wether u have 1 or 2 studs in each shoe and opinions vary.
