Study on equine barefootedness- please help by filling in this questionnaire aimed at horse owners

My name is Anne-marie Harwood. I am conducting a research project from the University of Chester on the subject of equine barefootedness.

As I am sure you are aware, there is a huge amount of controversy surrounding the issue of equine barefootedness, with myth and propaganda attached to both sides of the argument. This study is looking specifically at owners’ experiences of equine barefootedness, with the hope that the data produced will provide information for horse owners in the future. This study is not trying to conclude whether barefootedness is right or wrong.

The study is focusing on owners of barefoot horses and owners that have tried going barefoot before returning their horses to traditional shoeing.

If you would like to help and you fit the criteria mentioned above, I would like to invite you to fill in our on-line questionnaire. To do this, click on this link:

Some people may recognise this invitation, as we ran this survey over Christmas and New Year. We are now keen to gather data for the summer months. We thank everyone who took part in the previous round of the survey, but ask that you do not complete this survey a second time. However please pass on the link to friends who were not involved the first time round. We will post a summary of the final findings later in the summer at http://www.chester.ac.uk/ccsr/au.

If you have any questions or comments about the study, please do not hesitate to get in contact with the project leader: email e.creighton@chester.ac.uk

Thank You.

I currently have five horses who have at various stages of their lives been unshod and worked. I'm happy to fill in the survey for all of them - but I can't.

The University of Chester must be so proud....or not.

I did fully intend on trying to complete the questionnaire by the way, but gave up 2 pages in

I have temporarily gone back to shoes, for the showing season and I hate them. I am convinced that a huge percentage of hoof and leg problems are caused by horses wearing shoes - the concussion and restriction of the hoof capsual (sp?).

Horse is entirely not bothered either way. Stood like a rock to be re-shod. Seemed entirely unaffected with his new shoes, but I certainly won't be trotting him on the roads.

My horses have gone barefoot for 26 years. If we get one with shoes we have them taken off. None of them ever go lame or have windgallsetc or other leg problems. None have sore feet after road work. All have extremely hard healthy hooves. Some when they come in have hoof problems from old nail holes etc where the hooves have cracked.

Ive done it, but it was a bit restrictive, I could have given you information on upto 8 horses, but i couldnt!!!

I've done it but I've added loads of notes and some of the options really didn't fit how we manage our horses.

We do the old fashioned thing of starting out their fitness each year unshod/barefoot/whatever you want to call it and then shoeing when their workload gets such that they start to run out of foot and they need it. It generally means that they spend about 7 months of each year unshod and five months shod. And my older lad who I was thinking about when I filled in the survey is only shod in front for those 5 months.

You may want to add a few 'other' options so that people like me can explain ourselves.
