I was riding my mare out on a hack this morning and she was being quiet and good. Then all of a sudden she began violently shaking her head from side to side and up and down. She was also trying to rub her head on the horse we were out with. Then she reared! (This horse has NEVER reared before in the 4 years I have owned her). She continued to shake her head for another few more seconds.
Her ears seem to be irritated as these were twitching frantically as well - so myself and the rider on the other horse rubbed her ears and this seemed to soothe her.
She then carried on the rest of the ride as normal and was perfectly fine.
After my ride I fully inspected her ears and couldnt see anything obvious but her right ear was particularly sore when i was trying to touch it.
Anyone experience this before??? Im thinking perhaps she was stung by something in or around her ear. Anyone else got any other ideas???
