Riding my sharp lad down to the beach, theres a bit of quiet roadwork to get there but all's well.

Sudden, 3 big dogs (one was a german shepard, one a doberman type thing and another fairly large one) run out from a side passage leading to what i assume is the back garden of the house. They all start barking and running around Rodney. they were blocking the way so i stood for a while hoping they would bugger off but they didnt.

I was shocked at how well Rods dealt with it.... stood as still as a rock thank the lord. Usually he'd we'd be 500m away travelling at approx 50mph, and tbh I wouldnt blame him in this situation.

Anyway so he stands there whilst i shout "EXCUSE MEEEEEEE! THERES DOGS OUT HERE WHO OWNS THEM" over and over til the owner comes out. Whilst they regain control of their mutts, I proceed to give them an absolute earful of how irresponsible they are and how they were lucky that my horse is so well trained that he didn't kick one of them and how if they had any sense of decency they would have their dogs 1/5th of how well trained my horse is.

Finally, the episode is over, I stalk off on my high horse with my nose in the air until...

my horse that is "trained so well that every animal owner in the world should look up to me" has a freak out at some poor pedestrian walking their tiny pug dog about 20m up the road. Ages it took me to get by them all whilst the irresponsible big dog owners were up the road laughing at me...

SO embarrassed! And equally as angry

I went out yesterday in the high winds and flooded roads as poor boy in 24/7 due to a lake in his field! A couple were walking their dogs down a narrow country road off the lead and my boy isn't great with dogs off leads as we've been chased before. Said collies start bounding up to us (poor boy doesn't know what to make of it) and I asked if they could put them on the lead to which they replied 'it's ok they're good with horses'! I said 'well my horse isn't good with dogs and he could kick one of them' to which they huffed and disappeared off. Saw them later dogs on leads this time. Makes me so mad people can be so ignorant!

Haha! I had a similar situation with Ned!
Two big dogs were running up and down the line of their garden, barking, snarling and being rather nasty. To be fair though, it is their garden, they can do what they like. I don't like that they're there, but I must deal. Ned was fine, barely even looked at them.
I reach a field and I see someone coming and so does Ned. He's on his toes, but generally fine. Then he sees the dog. A tiny little thing, who's not even paying attention to us! Well, Ned starts, snorting, cantering on the spot, trying to go sidewards and getting in a tizz. We eventually get past and all is well again.

Makes you wonder what's going on inside their heads!!

Olliepop, I had a similar experience the other day as I passed over the marshes on the way to the beach. A stupid little yappy half-breed came bounding up to us and starting barking and jumping up and down at my boy`s legs. The owner shouted that it was alright, her dog was used to horses and I replied that maybe my horse wasn`t used to dogs and could kick and I got the height of abuse from her. Wish I`d had my whip . . .

Great story, OP!

A few years ago I was hacking along a narrow lane when a man approached with a rottie on a lead. The rottie lunged at my boy who spun round to avoid being bitten, it was that close.

The man then berated me for being 'in his way'!!! and it was my fault the dog attacked!!! I headed for a gateway to let him past and he was shouting at me the whole time.

In fairness to my boy he stood still like a rock. He is a little uncomfortable around big dark dogs now but otherwise fine. He loves my yellow labs.

The dog was later put down and even the vets were relieved. The man was a complete idiot and well known to all and sundry which I hadn't realised at the time, poor dog.

Makes me cringe. My daughter and friend hacked out 10 months ago and 2 German shepherds attacked. Various bite and claw marks and very distressed daughter ensued. Turns out dogs were owned by local dog trainer!! Thankfully horse and rider survived and whilst daughter traumatised horse who is 100 per cent thoroughbred just fine. I did pop round to dog owners and give them a bit of verbal warning!!!!!!!!!

My boy stood like a rock as the biggest German shepard I have ever seen belted towards us barking and growling. Then danced sideways all over the road at a little adorable fluffy thing bobbing along next to his mum minding his own business.

Maybe they just can't figure out what the wee ones are!

Trouble is, the world does not run around horse riders, and dog owners see the world from their point of view too! A little give and take and forward riding would help!
