Makes a change from the "adult riders on small ponies" threads we get I suppose.:D

I don't think I'll be teaching my baby to canter on a 16.3hh horse just yet.

You have accept that this woman is american. They have a different concept on how they live their lives, if it's not the done thing to wear a helmet, then we have to accept that.

You can't pass judgement on someone in another country just because it's not 'the proper thing to do' in our country.

I too, wouldn't let my child ride without a hat, firstly because it's the LAW in this country, and secondly because how we are brought up in our culture, we are so health and safety concious, it becomes second nature.

I think it should also be the law to wear cycle helmets, as I believe it IS the law in other countrys. I don't wear one, but if someone from another country started preaching at me about it, just because they all have to wear them, I'd tell them to bog off...

Good point, although in competition, official events, 4H for example, and at Riding Schools, Trail centres etc, hats are the rule for those under 16 I think it is, certainly here in Canada. What anyone does behind closed doors, on their own property, with their own horses is their choice, and their business, however ill advised it may appear.

:D So would I.

As for the cycle helmets I agree with you again, funnily enough, it IS the law for children under 12 to wear cycle helmets on public roads, and on Quad bikes and sno-mobiles under the age of 16 here. OK so Canada isn't America, but it is North America and many views and rules are shared.

The horses looked half asleep!!

That's Quarter Horses for you - until you ask them to do something and then they wake up, as Fairynuff very well knows:). All the ones I know seem to have 'On/Off' switches, they act like beach donkeys and then come out of the shute like a rocket. Putting children up on horses is a completely acceptable and normal thing, small ponies are much less popular here, I generally only see them at fairs giving rides on the carousel.

Personally I wouldn't let a small child do this kind of thing with a horse, not because of the size, but just because a horse, is a horse, is a horse...startle it for some reason or other and perhaps nature will overtake nuture, just for long enough to flatten a very little person. A little person who is, after all, just a baby and doesn't have the experience to anticipate a horses' reactions.
