Potentially a really stupid question...
I have a grey pony - he is dapple grey with really dark thighs and black upper legs then grey feather (grey as in steel grey not white) His mane and tail are white with black hairs. In the summer when he loses his winter fluff his feathers turn brown. They are clean! And they are very definately brown - I found brown on his upper thighs last year as well but not this year.
Is it just his summer coat or is it sun bleaching the hair or staining of some sort - I use pigoil on them all year round . Just wondering if using pig oil in hot sun could cause damage.
If it is his summer coat then does that make him a rose grey?
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Really? Wow. Are there any other symptoms you would expect to see and is it normal that he is the only horse affected?
Thank you

It's really common for UK grazing to be low in copper. One of the signs of low copper in the diet is black pigment going brown. Look at the hoof/vet section and search for the 'barefoot diet' which is actually a very sensible diet for all horses to be on. A popular vit/min supplement is the Pro hoof one available on ebay which is balanced for UK grazing.

My horse is on Pro Hoof and it's the first year she hasn't turned from black to brown :)
