Ok, probably a stupid question, but I'm looking to move my big mare up to 1.10's. A show centre near me has a schedule that goes BN ,1m open, 1.10 open, NC, Fox. So, does this mean that the NC will be built harder/bigger/more technically than the open, or is it the other way around. The classes appear to be separate...

Basically, I'd rather take the softer option, so any advice you might have will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

The NC would have to have a water tray in it, the open wouldn't have to, and normally I would say a NC was easier than an open, but when I was jumping them they were always combined - so no difference. Should be easier to get placed in a NC as not against open horses. I would just go with the schedule and class that works for you.

I don't know 100% but I'm pretty sure that the Newcomers would be more forgiving than a 1m10 open...? As the BN/Disc/Newc/Fox series are designed to help move you through the grades whereas opens and amateur classes are for those who have won a lot of money and want to jump the odd smaller class, so I'd guess the open would be more demanding just as the amateur 90 would be more technical/demanding than a BN?

I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people in here than me though! Good luck, regardless :)

BS don't let shows run a combined Newcomers and 1.10 Open (though they can run a combined Foxhunter and 1.20 Open...) and so there is generally one 1.10 course and one course walk with the newcomers horses jumping their first round and jump off followed by the 1.10 open horses doing the same. The awards are then given for both classes after the 1.10 open. A curious way of doing things I've always thought...

So in answer to your question, neither track should be harder and the only difference is the winnings of the horses taking part...

Thanks both - I was thinking along the same lines as you, MandyMoo!
dieseldog - I'd forgotten about the water tray....Will need to remind The Ears about those!

Great! Then I will definitely do the NC ;) Thank you :)

I hadn't considered that - we may well have a chance of a DC, IF I remember to ride properly and don't default to numpty mode!
