What is the difference between these two classes or are they the same thing?

And would you put this ned in either?

(excuse my hands - I have no idea what they are doing there)

Same class - if your horse is approx 16hh +, then yes - definitely - he looks very smart. If under 15.2 then small hunter class.

Does he jump? Looks like he could acquit himself well in a working hunter too!

Gosh you must be tall, he doesn't look that big in the picture.

I would have a go depending on classes on offer. He looks as though he would make a smashing worker - does he jump?

You could try middleweight hunter, they normally love huge, rangy types in the hunter classes and are leaning more and more to TB/sportshorse types rather than horses with more bone and IMO true hunters, which drives me round the bend, i.e. it is quite possible for a sporthorse to win a hunter class and a sporthorse class a the same show!

It is quite hard to make an assessment of your horse just from one picture but he looks true middle weight, plenty of bone. Pick your judge, choose someone who is traditional in taste.

Here I am speaking as if I know anything at all, which I dont really!!!!!

Just my point of view! Would love to see more pictures....!

He is a middle weight show hunter! And a very handsome one too (if I do sayso myself!

)

I agree with pinkweasel that more pictures would help assess which hunter class, from the one above, he is defo middle weight.

If he jumps as well would be a stonking working hunter!

defo looks the part! and if you ever get sick of him...... il be glad to take him off your hands (which are down by your knees!

Hmm, thanks for the nice comments!
ok we've done workers before and he didn't come anywhere - though was in the wrong bit. and judge was favouring smaller, niftier types

and also we've done one ridden hunter. Judge rode him though and he was an ar$e with her.

More pictures.

Pinkweasel- I am 5'7 so not hugely tall. I do have quite a long leg though. He has got a lot of bone & I would call him a middleweight, but he's a holstein so not really a true hunter type.

He does jump nicely though.

Cor he is gorgeous. If he was an arse with the judge then that won't do him any favours at all! Rosie's saving grace was that she always gave the judge a peach of a ride so however naughty she had been before that always stood her in good stead!

I would give workers and ridden hunter another go if I were you. Can't you get some different people to ride him so that he gets used to different riding styles, or was it just a bad day for him?

Aw, thanks.

truth be told, he's not an easy ride. We were pulled in first but dropped to 3rd after she had ridden.

He was in a bit of a strop that day so might give it another try.
What do judges normally look for in workers? Seems to me to be smaller, more compact types.

They are the same thing, like someone says to me what horse have you got I say a Show hunter. Although I do ridden hunter with mine, it is the same thing.

Your horse is gorgeous and you should defo get doing ridden hunter classes/ working hunter with him. What is one judges preferance is not necessarily anothers.

My grey has dapply legs just like yours but where yours has a white front leg, mines got a white hind leg on the same side.

There was a really nice pic in one of the show reports in H&H the other week of the champion MW hunter Standing Ovation. I think your horse is a lovely type, but perhaps slightly rangy for a traditional MW class.
I might be way off here but what about trying a large riding horse or sportshorse class? Or working hunter? I'm sure you'll find something to suit him as you can't beat a big grey!!

Just because one lot of judges didnt like him doesnt mean he is not a great looking horse, and another judge will adore him!!!

Id keep doing both classes. but put him in a pelham! (or adouble if you prefer) so that you have the tack correct. and also if he is an arse allows you and the judge a bit more control.
Also, in terms of him being arsey for others, get friends (of both sexes if at all possible) to ride him to practice being ridden by other people.

Also just as an added tip, from the showing pictures of him you just posted, his tail needs to be slightly shorter!

person to ask btw, is FMM!!!! she has just killed everyone at GYS with her hunters! and her heavy weight is a gorgeous dappled grey lad like yours!

So PM her!

Maybe its different with the smaller ones, but with asti - she's fine up to county level as a Show Hunter pony, but when you get to things like the BSPS champs, they prefer the flicky-toe show ponies more!

Show hunters are the lightweights, usually a good dollop of TB. Small hunters are always full up 15.2 so way small for your chap!

I'd say ridden hunter too.

For working hunter - you have to remember the jumping is the most important thing. You need a horse with a nice bold jump - and aim for a more cross country style round, not showjumping style. Refusals are worse than knockdowns but a good and stylish clear round stands you in really good stead for the showing section.

Really, the judges should be looking at a nice type to take hunting for the day, not some posh show pony.

Though size really different, Asti is a very good working hunter, a decent show hunter, and too small as a small hunter unless its a local show where she has done really well before...

So scale up build wise for your height!

(He's yummy by the way, very nice indeed!)

I think that working hunters are a little more workmanlike, judged more on the way of going and flowing jumping style but must be smart at the same time.

Ah - thankies all.

Gingernags I see what you mean - lovely neddy by the way

My boy's always jumped clear but I guess he does showjump them a bit.

Lucy - he was being an arse in the pelham!

I'm only doing it for fun but thanks for all the good advice though - will keep going!
