how do they retain their muscle tone so well  BiL commented that my three must get loads of exercise as they are very well muscled and toned, but they dont get anything out of the ordinary. Is it all just genetically programmed for them?

I would expect them to be like human athletes can be when they come out of training, the muscle grows soft and they lose that definition, but Flick and Amy have never been in training, and Islay has been out of training for three years now, and it hasnt happened?

But then thinking about it, I see loads of pet and show whippets and greyhounds which are in really soft condition...:confused::confused:

Sorry, random ramblings for a Wednesday :p:D

Well...ummm.....yes, I do, but I walk just as far and I dont look like they do :D They only usually get an hour a day, and sometimes (whispers) if work has been really rubbish they might not get a walk at all....:eek:

That's the brilliant thing about pointies - happy whatever! Mine love to run but equally love to lie in front of the fire. Yesterday I shook their leads and said beach and they looked out of the window, looked at the fire and shut their eyes. It wasn't the best outside...

LOL Inky_and_Sunny, yes I know that look very well :D I actually want to come back as a rescued greyhound when I am reincarnated, I am amazed at their ability to sleep for 23 hours a day - sounds like a great life to me :D

ETA - any pictures please ? :)

Not 100% sure, but it might be due to greyhounds having the highest percentage of fast-twitch muscle. This means they have the highest potential for strength and muscle growth due to all that sprinting than, say, an AVERAGE dog i.e spangles or GSD;):D

Awwww Freddie and Boyd are gorgeous and I love the names :D

Well it is never a problem sharing pics of my three, so in no particular order...

Sorry about the picture overload, I got carried away as usual :)

Hallo Inky and Sunny, I have a BoYdoG too! :p
It was a silly German name I had no choice over, though :p
Lovely dogs :)

Gazehound I will have to join you in the naughty corner, mine have been confined to barracks a couple of days this week because of my stoopid shifts with just morning and evening silly times in the field (and my God, are they silly :p)

I have been trying to build muscle back up after our respective holidays, not that I need to, it seems, they are both as fit as fiddles, have lost no tone and it is me that is suffering, can I have a greyhound, PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Gazehound sniggers quietly in the naughty corner.....

Yet another reason why I love my greyhounds, when I walk them they exercise themselves :D A perfect lazy-idle-layabouts dog

Mind you Flick almost got told off today on the walk - she was about to vanish, I called her, she looked round at me, thought about it, and vanished anyway  Not like her at all, the other two radiated smugness as they trotted up to me and I clipped their leads on :D

I would hazard a guess it is due to a lack of body fat deposits - just as some people do sod all and have six packs because they are naturally skinny, so looked toned as the muscle has nothing covering it.
Also because of the fast twitch, they only have to exercise in short bursts to build that muscle fibre, whereas something with more slow twitch would need to do lots of long bouts of exercise to have the same effect on then muscle.

I must say though, Spaniels are equally defined dogs, mainly because they never stop, so every muscle is constantly worked :D Otto has thighs akin to a Russian Shot-Puter :D :D Although that could be due to him spending half his walks swimming up the Trent!

You would have loved to see me over the past few days, mine tend to need stimulating as mentioned, they usually do two laps and then lie down but trying to lengthen that, so the more and the faster B hoons around the field, and therefore his sister hoons after him, I encourage him by hysterically shrieking 'GOOD BOOOOOY!' but I need to keep shouting it or he stops.
So picture shortarse just out of bed at 6am in a red pawprint dressing gown, blue deerstalker and wellies yelling 'GOOOD BOYY! GOGOGOGOGO! KEEP GOING! GOOD BOY!' as two dogs run around her in circles at high speed. Oh, the shame.

Would you like me to loan you Otto, he runs at high speeds for the entire duration he's outside, whether it be five minutes or five hours  I'm sure B and Bella could have great fun coursing him :D

That's what mine are like - when I had one I used to have to keep walking or he would disappear, now I have two I stand in the middle and they do circles around me. Much easier!

We're working on the circles around me, and getting them bigger, faster and wider.
B is doing these amazing joyous bounces, I must get a video, he is hilarious. Couple of months ago he would have stood and looked at me going 'yeah, what, don't you want me to pull you up a hill??'

Reading this thread, I realise I have been doing it completely the wrong way around all these years - THEY are exercising ME!

All I can say is that I wish I looked like Scoobie!
Tall, slim and toned!!

It doesn't take him much to keep him like either. Although over Christmas with his nasty injury it meant his muscles got a little soft but nothing 2 weeks gradual increase in exercise didn't sort out and that was the first time in all of his injuries his muscles looked weaker anmd Scoob has had a few injuries in his time!
