I think I know the answer already but just to double check...

You can't use a standing martingale with a grackle noseband can you?

Basically my instructor suggested using a standing martingale on Polly for a bit because she will go beautifully for a couple of strides then she gets bored and puts her head vertically up in the air, crosses her jaw and runs on. Obviously at this point, you have nothing in front of you, no mouth to speak of and zero control. It also makes me very very cross which doesn't improve my riding.

Was thinking about using a grackle anyway because of the jaw crossing thing (also because I happen to have one already

) and just thought it would be convinient if I could use the standing martingale with it.

Pony currently ridden in caverson, no martingale and barrel mouth baucher (similar to a mullen mouth baucher but with slightly more movement). Back, teeth, saddle fit are all up to date and I'm 90% sure this is a training issue/straight-forward evasion rather than pain.

thanks - any ideas much appreciated. I dont' like gadgetting them up and aim to ride with as little as possible but this head right up, jaw cross thing is driving me mental.

No , not with grackle but you can with a flash noseband, put the martingale on the cavason and the flash strap hopefully will help with jaw crossing. Good luck
