My supplier has no small bale hay so is delivering me two large rounds instead

I've never had this before and wonder if someone can help with the following..

I know its hard to say how many small bales they are equivilent to but I am guessing probably around 10??

Has anyone ever unwound one and stacked the loose hay undercover? the whole round is too big to go through the door of my hay store, failing that it will have to go under a tarp

Does it hold together ok once the string binding is cut?

Does the hay come off in 'sections' or is it literally just a constant roll?

Sorry for the daft questions but if anyone can help i would appreciate it!

Most round bales would not be quite as much as 10 small bales but that would of course depend on the size of your small bales which are very variable depending on how the baling machine was set up.

No there are no sections just one continuous roll and you may well find that the grasses are longer as they are not bent and broken so much during baling just rolled. If you cannot get the whole bale through your stable door try having the bale stood upright (ie on a flat end) and just unroll enough to make the bale reduce in size to get through the door. Your will need to tie it up again - maybe it is in a net wrapper that you can twist back around to hold the bale together. Then you could put the loose hay you have removed either into nets or on a sheet and drag that inside too. If you cannot do this then you will have to use a tarpaulin and tie it down well.

Not so easy to use as small bales but you may well find that the hay is better. Good luck,

Thank you so much, that all makes sense. I will be mainly weilding breadknives and filling haynets tomorrow then!

It doesnt fall apart with the white net taken off, the tarp might cause it to sweat and go mouldy esp with the higher temperatures we are having.

If it was me i would fill hay nets, have a coffee break, then start tearing sheets off it and lay flat in your barn on a palette so that air can get underneath to help keep it cool. It is good stuff so worth having.

Thank you

It was large rectangle bales so not too bad as it came off in sections. I stacked one bales worth in the store and the other bale is outside under a tarp. Having read your comments I will rig up some wooden battens ro hold the tape away from the hay to allow for airflow and will use that bale first

Thanks again

SH you were right the hay is great I am so pleased with it, also you were right in that it wasn't as much as 10 bales, apparently they are equivalent to 8 bales

It depends on the bale how many small ones you get
Yes we've unwrapped and put in piles in the hay shed before now and it works fine just make sure you put pallets underneath. It can be difficult to get a tarp to stay down.
It holds together ok usually but it is literally on a constant roll.
