Ok so maybe not so stupid, but wanted to confirm with the HHO collective that this may or may not be correct, I have seen a trailer advertised that I am interested in, the manufacturers plate on it says "laden weight 1360, gross weight 2000" - would I be correct in thinking this means the unladen weight is 640kgs?

For reference, it is a double sinclair trailer, and I'm not aware that they were ever this light, but can the plate be wrong??

If its a double sinclair and that light you wont catch me putting a horse in it.

Be aware several parts will not be available to repair it must be the best part of 20yrs since production ceased. Take a photo of the plate and upload . I will try and ask KS himself when I see him.

Laden weight and gross weight would be the same thing.

The Gross Weight is the all up weight: trailer including load.

This is also known as GVW (gross vehicle weight) and MAM (maximum authorised mass)

It could be that by laden weight they mean payload (i.e. what you can put in it), but as popsdosh infers, that would make the trailer weight of 640kg very light indeed.

I know Sinclairs were pretty much fibreglass and aluminium (believe the floors and ramps being the only wooden parts on them), but as a comparison an Ifor HB506 weighs 920kg and an HB511 weighs 1000kg.

I've read it as typing error, meaning that 'laden weight' should be 'unladen' (tare) of 1360, gross is 2000 so the payload (amount you put in) is actually 640?

1360 sounds very heavy, and 640 a miserly payload for a double. ..

640 would be terrible, it one small horse, I guess though I'd be stunned if a horse trailer would be that weight! And in Aus our standard floats are not really under 1100kgs, with extended or angle load floats being 1300kgs+, so I guess it didn't sound heavy to me!

I would want a weighbridge ticket showing the empty weight before buying

The sinclair ambassador double is about 750 empty with a MAM of 2000 - I read that on a 2006 post in another forum

They are. They are a double pony trailer made of very lightweight materials and way almost nothing

It's the correct weight.
I got a Sinclair Sovereign and it ways around 650 kg unladen. it takes 2 16 hh horses.
It was one of lightest trailer on the market when they were new. It's made out of aluminium and plastisol.
Mine has never let me down. I had a new Ifor Williams aluminium floor put in it, aluminium grooms door platform, a new rear and a new front ramp, LED lighting. The biggest issue has been finding out that the axles had rusted badly so I had 2 new axles fitted complete with new brakes.
It's still running ok but I am now having to consider selling it as my 17 hh homebred horse is a bit too long for it. :(
