I took my 6 y/o ISH mare out this morning. She is very good in traffic and used to dustbin lorries, buses etc, she sees them everyday. However this morning I was riding through the same village I ride through every day when we came to a bus waiting at the bus stop. The bus was on the other side of the road so it was fine for me to keep going and I was halfway past it when a really loud 125 motorbike came the other way. She wasn't happy but he continued coming towards us and didn't slow down. Just as he reached us, Star let off what I thought was a HUUUUGE buck. I swear I came a foot off the saddle. Anyhow gave her some strong leg and voice and she moved forward. Then.......I hear a voice behind me. "your horse just tried to kick me" I look round and there is a woman jogger literally stood two feet behind her tail. She then continued to lay into me verbally over how Star had tried to kick her as she ran up behind us and I had no control of my horse! Doh!!! I cannot believe anyone would be so stupid?!!! Is it not common knowledge that horses kick? I just dread to think what would have happened if Star had made contact. I dread to think. That's my moan for the day anyway!!

I think I would have lost it. No that impressed with Mr Motorbike either. I am currently in London and get really annoyed at all the signs telling drivers to look out for motorbikes because I don't think a motorbike has even slowed done or even noticed that a horse was there.
 
The motorbike was really loud, I think they must have tinkered with the exhaust or something. Even the elderly man getting on the bus raised his eyebrows! I must admit it seems to be the riders of bigger bikes who do slow down and give you much more room. I don't think when people overtake a horse that they realise it takes only one sideways jump to be at the white lines in the middle of the road.

Hmmn the more I think about it, the more I can see that Star was really feeling trapped. We had railings one side, bus the other, motorbike in front and then the idiotic woman behind was just the last straw I think! Poor girl. If as a 6 y/o that's all she did I must be pretty lucky!
 
That runner is a twit!! What idiot RUNS up behind a horse?!?!?!

Was there a pavement she should have been on? Also she was on the wrong side of the road was she not - your meant to walk facing into traffic

I hadn't thought of that.....she was on the wrong side of the road! There is no pavement on that side where I was. Stupid old biddy, I'll give Star a nice big bran mash in anticipation of meeting her again!
 
What an idiotic woman. Please take a camera when you aim Star's bum at her next time - lol!

I was riding on the beach a few years ago with my OH, daughter and her friend and a very large lady was wandering along collecting shells. As we trotted towards her she suddenly decided to walk right across our path and bend over with her huge ar$e towards us to pick up a particularly fine shell that she had spotted. Great timing or what. My horse reared and stupid woman's husband started shouting at me that the metal thing (I think he meant the bit) was strangling him and that was why I couldn't control him. Er, thanks for the advice mate.

Starr sounds like she was a real star and behaved amazingly well for a 6 year old. I think that my 15 year old would of lost it in those circumstances!!
 
Whoa there-----steady ladies, steady.
Why should people (strange breed) who have no contact what so ever with horses understand the dangers? Much of the stuff we take as common sense is off this planet to non-horsey(poor souls) folk. If you dont believe me just think of the idiotic (to us) questions the non-horsey (may they gain enlightenment) set ask!
I relate it to my other sport......gliding. If I had a pound for every time I'd heard "but it hasn't got an engine, how can it fly" (bloddy idiots) i'd have a shiny new Oakley. Funny how pilots think its the most stupid question anyone could ask.
 
Sorry No Faulter but the way I see it is that the woman jogger WAS completely clueless about horses and how they behave (as was the shell collecting woman and her husband whom I encountered) but the problem is that they had decided that they WERE experts. It would be like the ignorant people telling the glider pilots that gliders COULDN'T fly without engines rather than asking how they flew.

I have no problem with people being ignorant on any particular subject but I do object to them deciding that they are the experts and the people who really know what they are doing are the amateurs!
 
Where I live we have to take on extra insurance liability to the amount of £5,000,000 before we allowed a permit to ride in the local Park, despite us allpaying the local community charge that pays for the place. It's only horse riders, idiots on mountain bikes, skate boards etc don't need insurance.

And why the extra insurance..... because there was a claim once by an idiot woman with a push chair who rammed it into the back end of a horse & guess what happened....the horse kicked out & kicked the pushchair over. Always assume that everyone is an idiot when you are out riding......& I doubt if you'll ever be disappointed.

You can bet your life my insurance would have had to pay out if Star had better aimed her kick! But if I had fallen off as a result it would have been tough luck I suspect. Whichever way I suppose it was always going to be my fault. Quite how I am supposed to stop my horse kicking someone two feet behind her when I'm mounted I don't know. Coo I never realised Star was such an out of control, vicious animal. It's food for thought though because I do get cyclists fly by me often, they could just as easily get a kick on the way past. Doesn't bear thinking about really.
 
Stupid woman.
I was outriding our horse once and this bloke with an alsation let the thing run right under Jimmy who stood for a few seconds then tried (and failed) to kick it. The dog was snapping and barking round Jimmys legs and he was very good really. The dogs owner yelled that he would see me in court if my out of control horse kicked his dog! My hubby was at Jimmys head and not about to let go! The bloke was really rude and kept on about seeing us in court, I think he WANTED Jim to kick the dog. He soon shut up when another dog owner came up and said she would be our witness and our horse was under proper control while his dog wasnt! He beat a hasty retreat! Some people!
 
I am always astonished at the number of spectators in the horsy area at shows who manage to walk into my horse and then say "oh" in asonishment, "I never noticed a horse there". I mean its only a 16.2 FGS!
