Jeese Louise - my mare's mud fever STILL hasn't completely gone, although it is looking a helluva lot better and has certainly turned a corner. Wondering though, do sub zero temps (I'm talking a week of minus 12 at night and minus 5 in the day) impair healing? I'm thinking along the lines of vaso constriction, or in terms of MF would it not affect it?

I think the conditions might actually help it to improve - mud fever is a fungal-type infection and they thrive in warm moist conditions, so the colder and drier the better I would say.

Also, if it's any help I found a bit of a cheap miracle cure for my older horse's mud fever a few years ago, which probably might suit these conditions... It's basically yellow sulphur powder mixed with udder cream, slather it on every day or so, it will cover the area and be waterproof in these conditions so might nip it in the bud. PM me if you want a bit more info.

Thanks for that Hels Bels - yeah, I suppose bacteria are more likely to be killed off in these temps. Actually got something call Conontrane (for bed sores and nappy rash) top slather on once we're clear again. Recommended by a neighbour who struggled with MF for years until she started using this as a barrier cream apparently.
