Has anyone tried using a Suber Pad?
My mare is 27 and she has lost a lot of muscle either side of her withers, meaning that getting a saddle to fit is like gold dust! I have tried 6 or 7 saddles on and they fit fine withers wise, but are digging in underneath where the muscle has wasted because of the massive change in muscle etc.

Someone has reccomended that I use a Suber pad to almost 'fill in the gaps' to make a saddle fit.
I am not really looking at forking out £1000+ for a made to measure as she is so old- so what are everyones opinions on them?

Chocolate cake for anyone who gets down this far :p:D

sorry i havnt used the suber pad but ive recently bought a limpet saddle pad its 20mm thick and is ment to make ur saddle as if its made to measure for your horse. theyre quite expensive but they have off coloured ones for half price on ebay so mine was under £30 which i didnt think was too bad to try for my very high withered horse that lost a load of weight. it actually seems like its worked very well the saddle beds down into the pad and not the horse! http://www.limpetsaddlepad.co.uk/

Have never used a suber pad, but from what I have read, they sound potentially very useful.

Just to suggest another option - there is an 'air-pad' saddlecloth, called a Korrector, made by the 'Wow' saddle people, which might possibly be worth considering.

The only trouble is this sort of thing only really works under a treeless saddle with lots of very slow very correct schooling. You cant fit a treed saddle to a pad, and yet obv you cant fit it to the atrophy and expect the muscle to recover when the blood supply is being compromised......

Best Ive seen was an ex race horse whose atrophy has nigh on vanished after being ridden in a vogue with a heather moffet wither pad and correct schooling.

I use a suberpad under a Heather Moffet treeless (or rather "soft treed") saddle, it is as some one else has said, a great piece of kit. Made from tiny cork pellets it moulds itself to the horse's back and becomes quite solid, therefore keeping pressure even. You CAN use them under a treed saddle, good for muscle atrophy, lop sided shoulders, or under developed backs. Have a look at David Ahn's website to see how they can help.
