Is there any substitute to pulling a mane that still looks as good, i have 2 that hate their mane being pulled and currently use a bot knife and magic comb but it looks a bit german, any ideas for a substitute??

yes! but I don't ever admit to it : ) My old riding school teacher would go mad if she knew! Some of our horses just hate having their mane pulled - and I hate doing it so.....

I trim my horses manes a couple of times a week. I can hear gasps from you now but it isn't the blunt cut you are imagining I promise!

I do it BEFORE combing and tiny tiny amounts each time with small scissors. Tiny strands of hair - more than five strands is too much - as well as tiny amounts from the bottom and then you don't get the layered look! The trick is to not cut it on the horizontal - do it at a 45 degree angle up the mane and the opposite way down and stop for a couple of days.

You need to be patient though - its no use doing it the day before a show - little and often and keep on top of it - and no one can tell you haven't pulled it : ) Also, if its really thick - brush / comb it a lot!!

If it's fairly thin, you can get away with just cutting it :D
Yep, I mean it ;) Dante's is fairly thin. When I originally took about 6 inches off it, I did hack straight accross - and then took another few inches off carefully cutting directly upwards into the mane, to thin the ends.
You can't tell it was ever cut :p I do his forelock in the same way.

there is NO substitute to a properly pulled (and thined mane)! the other choices are raked (fine till it grows back) or cut !!!!!!!!!? or hogged (perfect on a cob! or polo pony or bulky hw hunter). i pull most of mine but have a pair of good scissors for the loopy sensitive ones, but would never rake a mane the re growth is a nightmare! i also pull all my tails properly 4 to 5 times a year and spend time bandaging and training them to sit nice! but have to confess to raking a few tails! (but needs ongoing attention and doesnt look as good as the properly pulled tails!) i dont feel guilty pulling manes and tails as i have my legs and bikini line waxed! and it is pain for gain!!!!!

I much prefer to pull if I can, but have two geldings on the yard that will not have it. The thinning rake and solo comb are the other alternatives. Not as good, but better than nothing. Each time I plait, it seems to thin it a bit...

i cut my horses mane :) to thin it i have used a rake but she got v suspicious of that too cos it reminded her of pulling  so i brush it v regularily now and that keeps it thinner...
more fool the person who ever tried to show me that i could pull it lol! they'd hit the deck before i could say 'try'!!
oh - i also cut her tail - and show - and have peps asking me how i get it looking so nice... practice makes perfect ;) lol

There isn't one that will get the same result, a friend of mine has tried every comb, rake thinning scissors and all sorts, its still a big boffy mane :D looks cute though!
