Hi, I think my girl hurt her foot somewhere on a hard object on the last few metres home from a ride today (literally), had been on hack all fine. We got back and I got off she pulled her leg up and was reluctant to put it down. Checked the leg and foot but could find nothing wrong??? Seemed to be less resistant to put weight on after a few minutes already so hopefully nothing's been damaged, what could have happened? I think I heard some cracking noise just when approaching home under her foot so it seems she has definitely trod on something. She is unshod behind.

yes, very likely. Can bruising lead to anything like and abscess or so? Paranoid ...

it can do but not always, hopefully be more comfortable in the morning and it will come to nothing other than being a bit tender for a few days. Let us no how she is.

Hi, thanks, well, got her in from the field this morning and she was fine so took her on a hack - we don't have a lot of roadwork around here so didn't notice anything else, she just went footy again towards the end over some slightly more stoney bits along the lane and onto the yard. Not as bad as yesterday but obviously something still there.

Should I give her some time off? Was going to ride again tomorrow and then see. She has Wednesdays off anyway.

She has been known to have thin soles I ended up getting her fronts shod various years ago for this reason. Find that also we are hacking more at our new yard as currently have no school until May (being built then) plus this time of year was when she has had problems in the past, I think the soles soften up in wet conditions?

Hot tub it with soda crystals for a few days, surgical spirit put on the soles can help harden them, my mare has sensitive soles and this has helped her in the past.

Soda seriously softens feet and I would avoid it unless you are sure that you are treating an abscess to help it break out.

my horse also had thin soles (as well as under run heels) and we went down the egg bar route which eased the heel problem slightly. Long story short we have gone back to basics low sugar/high fibre feed with a good supplement (forage plus hoof health balancer) plus micronised linseed.

He is now unshod and hacking out in front hoof boots until the soles toughen up which will take some time, however I realise this isn't always an option for everyone.

I found it impossible to totally toughen up the hoofs with him being shod because while wearing shoes the soles/frogs aren't in direct contact with the ground so aren't building the callous or beefing up the frog.

Could you look at the diet/ supplements what do you feed?

regarding the wet softening the soles certainly since I have been bringing in overnight my horses hoofs are much better so I think there is something in that.
