My TB has come in this evening very lame in his off hind. Apparently the lady who let him out this morning noticed he didnt seem quite right (but didnt mention it). He can weight bear but is very uncomfortable, and is generally either resting it or holding it up at times especially when I want to look at it! He can walk & is stepping through very well - more than the other leg oddly. Almost like he doesnt want to stetch the leg far behind him. Doesnt want to move over or manoevre.
No sign of heat, swelling, injury or tenderness. He is unshod & has a history of absesses in the past in front feet - but usually show heat in feet & swelling around coronet band etc. No sign of this and doesnt seem tentative putting foot down.
Is willing to bend leg & flex hock. Doesnt seem stiff.

Am thinking probably pulled a muscle or similar?? Any ideas? Will obviously see how he is in morning - although now he has been standing in a couple of hours he seems worse.

I would definitely get the farrier /trimmer to make sure it is not an abcess first especially as there is no other obvious cause .I my experience most lamenesses that look bad are foot (just my opinion) .
Often moving over and manoevering mean taking weight on areas of the foot that hurt.
If you get your trimmer to take a look then at least you can be sure it is not abcess.

Hi,
I just had the vet out to my horse, who was a bit lame behind, and its his back. But if its just one leg, then its more likely to be in the leg? Sorry, cant be of more help. I would call vet if its no better tomorrow.

Hiya thanks for replies.
Vet came yesterday morning, turned out to be a punctured sole which after sedation was removed. It has left a but of a hole but fortunatley as caught early has not become infected. So now poulticing & on a course of anti biotics just in case. He is significantly sounder already! I guess I should have known we were far too lucky having no such problems over the last 5 months of being unshod!
