Tonight my 20 year old New forest came in from the field mildly lame. It was so mild I didn't actually notice it until I tried to move him over to pick his feet out and he wouldn't budge. I moved him forward and he went hoppity on his off fore.
However on trotting up it looked much more like a near hind problem. I felt all his legs and there was no heat or swelling in any of them and no digital pulses. No sign of any kicks or other trauma.
Bright enough in himself and was eating his tea and hay.
He's barely had a days lameness all the time I've had him so not sure how to deal with it! Fairly sure it's not lammi due to lack of pulses
Wondered about abscess but no heat anywhere?
My instinct is to turn him out tomorrow - he's not the sort to generally hoon about in the field and thought he might be better stretching his limbs rather than not moving and getting stiff (him being old and all).
Any thoughts or advice? At what stage should I be calling the vet?
