Any ideas on my mare brought in from the field this afternoon lame? No obvious heat in the leg (off fore) but then I had just hosed it. We had a lesson on Tues evening and when I rode her on Wed she just didnt feel right. She is a little sore in walk, but in trot it is definitely there. I wonder (and hope) it might be an abcess so going to get the blacksmith out to see. The fields are so muddy I do wonder whether she's slipped over and twisted something. Question is - do I turn her out if I dont know what it is? She's sensible in the field and doesnt charge round.

Any bright ideas? Thanks.

PS - only just discovered this forum and it's so good!!! Thanks for it!

prob just sprained herself in the field - I'd give her a few days off, check for heat and then see what happens.....Ty used to sprain himself hooning around

A few weeks ago I had a similar issue with my mare. She's very rarely lame so it had me stumped. She wasn't lame in walk but was definitely nodding in trot. There was no swelling, puffuness, heat etc in her leg (near fore). I had the farrier look at her and he couldn't find anything. So I realised it was higher up. I had kept her in for the week before the farrier saw her and after the farrier saw her and couldn't find anything I then turned her out. I did daily stretches with her to see if it would loosen her up and this seemed to help as she went sound and has been fine since, so I guess she had locked her shoulder...again!

I hope you find out the cause as I know how frustrating it can be. If the farrier can't find anything I'd either go the vet route or backman route.

If there is no obvious signs of lameness then I too would go for the abscess... have you considered trying the horse on different ground surfaces? if it is a strain then there would usually be an increase in lameness on either solid or deep going.
