Mare age 18 has spavin on hock but its not troubled her for years, came in from a short walk round block, and 5 min away from yard suddenly went hopping lame on right hind. Hobbled back to yard, I rushed to yard to see what up, no heat, no swelling, spavin same as its allways been. Flexed hock, no resistance, but she is standing just resting on the toe. Gave her an hour rest in case she had stumbled and knocked the bone on ankle, no different. No signe of bruised sole, shoes been on for weeks, still no heat, yard owner( v experienced) said give bute, and check in morning then if no better call vet. So I've hosed it from spavin down, rubbed it dry, no cuts ect. I am so baffled. Am thinking she has either tweaked it and it will be ok shortly, or something serious has happened. We walked her a short distance an hour ago, walked on toe for 5 or 6 strides then ok. But when she turned went back to toe walking and then ok but up slight incline into yard she walked on toe again. She is in stable on deep bed now having tea with bute. No temp or anything. No heat anywhere from hock to toe.. I am worried... V worried , I have that sinking feeling its ot a simple tweak... Any ideas... Be assured the vet is calling in morning.

No signe of anything in foot. Or frog. I've scrubbed out foot so I could see it without mud. She doesn't react to having hoof tapped with end of hoof pick. Me and yard owner been over the leg and foot with a torch. I am baffled. It happend so sudden. She was on a Tarmac surface plodding along when it happened.

I would call the farrier before the vet - sudden and severe onset of lamness is often an abscess or hoof/shoe related problem (will save you money too!).

Hope she is ok x

Am going to call farrier in morning. Shoe is on quite firmly. Am trusting all you more experienced h&h ladies, she had access in other hind 3 month ago and she has been on v v muddy field. Then trip to local store to get poultice stuff and a boot.. It was going through my mind about abscess.. She is much same tonight, standing on it sometimes but resting it more than weight bearing. Still no heat anywhere, so must be deep
I really do appreciate the advice, it's bit like ask the audience.....!

Went up at 8, above her fetlock is swollen up now still no heat. I can't fathom it. Farrier and vet coming in morning

I am no lameness expert I will just have to wait and see what experts say in the morning, I am quite concerned now . Gave here another bute for the night, but won't give in morning don't want to mask anything.

My lami's abcess was huge, tracked up his leg so cue swollen leg. It took nearly a week to burst the. Two weeks to drain out of three exit holes.
Xx
