Hi,
My young horse over the last few days has developed some hard bumps over his face, lots of them. They can be picked off and have a little ‘goo’ behind them. Not soft and squishy. But they’re new, totally random. He doesn’t seem too bothered by them, so I was wondering if he’s had a reaction to something?

Given him 10 human anti-histamines following a dosage I was told a while ago.

Poor boy looks terrible. Hard to get a photo because he’s a fidget!

Any ideas? Anything I need to be doing to help him out? As I said he doesn’t seem bothered, eating/drinking as normal etc.

If you've had heavy rain (I know a lot of places have) then I would say it's likely to be rain scald. I've also had tick bites come up like that, but I could see the ticks. Have a good look (you might need a torch on a darker horse) and if you can't see any ticks, I'd hazard a guess that it's rain scald. It looks pretty typical of it, from your picture.

Could well be rain scald. A wash with very dilute hiiscrub will hep. But as always a chat with your vet is recommended for any neW or unusual condition.

Yes I think that’s what it could be actually - for some reason being on his face I didn’t even consider it.
Thanks!

I do wonder, why has he got it?

All of my others live in the exact same conditions (out for 8-12hrs day, in at night), well sheltered fields etc, light rain rug etc.

He does have a very very fine coat.

Anything that can be done to prevent?

I think sometimes particularly heavy rain can set it off, especially on horses with more sensitive skin. My Arab went through a phase of having it, but not seen any sign of it for a few years.

My gelding had the same a couple of weeks ago. I washed with a diluted hibiscrub over a couple of days and the small scabs on his face have gone.
