Evening all,

Yesterday morning went down to check on the boys. Howie had overnight (saw them 5pm the previous evening) grown a lump on his neck the size of an egg/tennis ball!! Its hard and you can almost get your hand round it. Its sits halfway down the front of his neck. Its warm but not hot- he doesnt mind you poking it.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be? Anyone had anything similar in their horse- if so was it easily solved?

Since yesterday it has not changed other than getting harder- Its now solid- you can sink your finger in etc.

I would have said a bite of some descripton but would have expected it to have gone down a bit. I would keep an eye on it and check with your vet if it hasn't gone down in 2 or 3 days.

yeah I was wondering that- but to be bitten at night in March? Vet didnt want to come out yesterday- told me to call back in 2/3 days if there was no change or it got worse. Not sure if getting harder is good or bad?

If your weather has been anything like mine it is a bit buggy early evening so a bite is a possibility. If it doesn't bother him when you play around with it it isn't likely to be an abcess so woldn't be too concerned. Let us know how he goes on.

Mine has one on his neck but about the size of a cherry and has had it for over a week now. Got the vet to have a look at it earlier on in the week when he looked at another horse. As it didnt hurt he didn't necessarily think that it was an abcess but concluded that it probably was an abcess from where he had itched and got a splinter or something in it. It still hasn't changed size or anything though

so will speak to vet again tomorrow

maybe an abcess. if there is a swelling and it hards then its not infected, if you can push your finger in it then its infected, so it might be an abcess. keep an eye and let the vet know of any changes. if it doesnt change and the vet wont come out id be calling another vet.

Last Monday my lad come in with a load of lumps on his neck and shoulder, one huge, under his rug, they were hot and itchy, he rubbed them raw overnight. The vet was out the next day anyway and agreed they were fly bites, tho early in the year.

Bite, kick? Could be a simple haematoma - one up from a bruise where the blood leaks out under the skin and forms a little lump. They gradually get re-absorbed on their own although gentle massaging can speed the process up. If ned develops a temperature or is unhappy at having his lump touched or it changes in any way, vet for re-assurance.

its still there- still rock hard- still tennis ball sized..... tomorrow I think I will call the vet as Im a bit worried about how hard it is. Will upload picks in a second
