Of course it’s Christmas week , my horse has suddenly started with acute diarrhea this afternoon

waiting on call back from vets

He’s only been on his new yard 2 weeks he is used to being away from home a lot so this doesn’t usually bother him 😞

Been mixing hay from old yard / in with the new

Bright in himseld and no temp but it’s horrible 😞
Horse already on pro and pre biotic
Christmas vet bill incoming I think 🤔

Honestly, if your horses’ behaviour and eating habits haven’t changed, I wouldn’t be racing to phone the vet, I’d probably keep an eye on him for a couple of days, and contact the vet if there’s any change in eating habits/behaviour.

If yours is on a restricted diet or if he’s on particularly lush grazing, I’d increase his hay overnight by 2kg and/or increase access to (preferably stalky, fibrous) turnout or provide hay in the field to pick at, and see how that goes.

Saus gets the runs when she’s lacking fibre intake (usually in spring/autumn when there’s a flush of grass), so try not to stress too much about it (easier said than done, I know; I panic every time Saus has this issue, even though I know the cause logically!)

I really would just keep an eye on it, because it can be the symptom of any number of issues.

Is the diarrhoea projectile and (very) smelly? Mine had this a year ago, it turned out to be an infection. Cleared up very quickly with antibiotics from the vet. She had similar timing to yours, was taken ill on Friday evening so I had 2 weekend vet call outs!

He’s already on protexin and has been for a while , after a friends horse was nearly lost with colitis I dodnt take any chances even if just vets advice thank you everyone
Colitis is a valid fear, I lost a horse to it (among other things causing it) and it honestly gives me heart palpitations if I see properly sloppy poop, I always pester my vet with it, and at this point she just ignores it or tells me to keep an eye on it. Tbh I bother the vet more for my peace of mind than for the horse, because I know logically that Saus will probably be fine.

So, more likely than not, it’s just a case of the runs. I know it’s not easy, but leave it in the back of your mind, get a good night’s sleep, and reassess tomorrow. By all means send the vet a message if it’ll make you feel that bit more at ease. Tired humans are less functional than well-rested humans! Hopefully he’s all good, and I think you’re doing everything right at this point!

Generally I would agree with this advice, except tomorrow is the last normal working day until next Monday so actually it probably is better to consult a vet sooner rather than later

How is the horse now?
Much better , was already on pre and probiotic supplements already and then got a paste added in by the vets also so he’s had that for last few days , has remedies very bright throughout and no causes for concerns other than the horrible diarrhea / still soft but definitely more formed now 🤞 hoping he stays this way now
