Yesterday I got myself and pony all ready for today's hunter trial, went to take him for a short hack and he was lame
I felt it immediately in walk and he wouldn't trot at all. It was very noticable when he was asked to turn - his right hind was obviously sore.
Checked it over, no heat, no swelling, no sensitivity around the sole but clearly something was sore. I cold hosed it and then took a guess and poulticed the foot as there was a small indentation near the frog - not quite a hole but it was a bit softer than the rest of the sole.
Went up this morning, there wasn't much to see in the poultice other than some rust that had come off the shoe - that gave me a fright at first as it looked like blood! It was a bit smelly but not an obvious abscess - also pony was sound.
Poulticed it again and just been up to check it again, pony is sound, full of beans and poultice was clean. No heat, swelling etc, he's not fussed about you handling that foot/leg.
I've bathed it in epsom salts and sprayed with purple spray and just kept him in.
Any suggestion what could have caused it and next steps? I've written off this weekends XC (typical bad timing!) but everyone has suggested that I may have jumped the gun a bit and it may have just been a bruised sole caused by standing on a stone.
Just want to make sure there is nothing else I could have missed?
