I have two horses (19yrs and 13yrs) that up until recently travelled together quite happily in the trailer. One can only travel on the right (the 13yr one) as otherwise she falls over. Then one day, for no apparent reason, the 19yr old who has travelled on the left for years started to stumble and loose her balance - on two separate occasions pulling off a front shoe and being in quite a distressed state. We are at a loss as to why she has suddenly become unbalanced. We have travelled her on the right on her own and she is fine. Any suggestions and do you think I could travel her backwards i.e. facing out the back and the other one facing forwards! is this illegal?

I'm not sure that it is legal and I think it would seriously unbalance your trailer - weight distribution being different and all.

No idea why she's suddenyl struggling though. Could you see if the one that needs to travel on the right could now travel on the left without falling over? Is it something like a medical issue stopping the usually ok one from balancing? (sore back maybe on one side?)

its weird you have put this actually cause my lad all of a sudden became really bad in the trailer and reared three times...I believe it must have been something while travelling as he was great getting loaded....
I too wonder if the trailer was unbalanced and it scared him....
I was catching a lift with someone else so it wasnt my trailer but my horse is the most relaxed, easy going horse around so it was odd for him to behave to badly....the floor was not slippery but I do believe it was unbalanced and this is what caused him not wanting to load the other end and causing himself to panic and rear....
Are your horses simular in shape and size..?
I was travelling with a little pony and my lad is 16hh so this is what I put it down to....
I also wonder if travelling backwards is legal as my boy would be much happier with that....

My horse has always traveled fine in a trailer and then last year he started scrabbling up the right hand side and putting his body onto the partition which was very scary.
I tried him with a friends horse in her trailer and he did the same, although he seemed better when on the left hand side

He'll load fine and stand OK, but as soon as we move he's V unhappy. I'm now too scared to try any more and so am buying a lorry!
