I use Sudocrem to combat mud fever and it works a treat.

However, have just found out that it can't be used under rules as it contains a banned substance, benzyl benzoate.

I didn't realise benzyl benzoate was banned either, as I've found this very useful for sweet itch etc.

Its in many creams (benzyl benzoate) for humans & horses and even some shampoos..some things made for horses seem to not have any ingredients which is rather a worry. I wasn't aware of this being banned,so thank you for posting.

Better stop using Anusol too. Cant find anything saying its banned? What rules are you referring to. Its used very widely for scabies etc too? Brilliant stuff hope its not banned.

Am i being a bit dim? would you or the horse have to ingest the sudocrem or anusol? or is it enough just to have applied it or be coated in it? How much would need to be in your system taken in this way for it to show up in a test and is it tested by blood test or wee? Why would lavender be banned?

Well damn..... I'm forever applying sudocrem to Jack, especially when he gets cuts that I don't want being infected.

Granted I don't use it for mud fever, last time for that I used Lincoln's Muddy Buddy stuff which worked wonders.

I think you'll find it's banned because it contains local anaesthetic.

By the way, it's FABULOUS for treating human eczema. OH has had a patch for 25 years that is almost gone after 3 months of Sudocrem.

HAHA it stings like mad tho!! My husband has some chaffing in a delicate area after some long distance running, and he found out the hard way how much it stings :-)

It's never stung me or my old man. And it stops itches in their tracks because of the local anaesthetic.

You old man odd in any way ;) ?

I can't either! I got that info from a previous thread, and I looked up the website and it said is was anaesthetic, but I don't recognise those ingredients as having that effect. I'll have to have another google now.

......

yup, says this "It has a weak local anaesthetic to help ease pain and irritation"

I think benzyl alcohol is a natural mild anaesthetic.......... It does sting, I put it on Freddies sheath to stop all the ticks from getting him and he was kicking his sheath, babies don't like it on their bums either, we need a trial lol X

if you are worried about the use of Sudocreme then you could swap to Germolene - thats is antiseptic and anesthetic but without the benzyl alcohol.

Benzyl alcohol is a natural product but high doses can be toxic.

However i see no problem in using it in sudocreme as the dose is very low :)

We call it 'magic cream' in our house! I used it on babies' bottoms (no complaining from them at the time), elderly aunt's ear where her hearing aid had rubbed her raw, dog's chaffing in 'arm pit' due to running in wet mud (!), under boobs where bra wire had rubbed raw etc etc etc ... Usually only took one application overnight and all better in the morning. :D

Now keep a tube in the tack box, but have only had to use a little on minor cuts (touch wood!) and we won't be entering any competitions any time soon (although H says he's aiming for Rio now! ;) )
