TBH i never have but my cob has become fizzy and its the only thing that i can think of that has changed?? someone mentioned it was the sugar beet fizzing her up? but ive never heard this before??? has anyone else?
I wouldn't class it as 'very heating' but some owners do report problems with it. Usually, the most heating foods contain cereals, such as oats, barley, wheat and maize, which contain a lot of starch.
Sugar beet doesn't contain starch but does contain sugars - the molassed variety is about 20% sugar, whereas an unmolassed version such as Speedibeet is only 5%. If you are worried about 'fizziness' then you might be best to try an unmolassed version first.
Personally, though, have never had horses fizz up on either the molassed or unmolassed version.
I've never had a problem with it, but then I've always used unmolassed sugar beet. But I have heard of other people's horses having stomach upsets from sugar beet so I guess thats something to watch out for.
sugar beet fizzes my pony up, no one believed me until i took him off it they seen the difference! it was molassed stuff i used so changing your horse onto unmolassed could be the answer!
Sugarbeet sends my lad barking mad. I can't feed him it at all. Interestingly though he's fine with speedybeet, apparently the sugar levels differ or something. Maybe it's worth a try.

Speedibeet is unmollassed and only around 5% sugar whereas normal mollassed beet is around 20 - 24% sugar. Sugar is a starch and it is probably that which makes some horses spooky etc. I love speedybeet and feed it to all of mine. The other thing to remember though is that the weather at the moment is making some horses excitable, it does not always have to be down to feed.
[/ QUOTE ] Sorry to nitpick, but sugar is not actually a starch, although both are soluble carbohydrates, so are quite similar. Sugars consist of one or two molecules, whereas starch contains a whole chain of molecules. Starch can be broken down to produce sugars though.
I find that speedibeet is like rocket fuel to my TB, and it upsets his stomach however I started him on Alfabeet a couple of months ago as a way of getting extra fibre into him as he is suffering a bout of gastric ulcers (thanks to bute) and he is absolutly fine on it.
When I smelt it I thought he would turn his nose up at it bur he loves it, is sane on it and it does not upset his stomach. Just something else to consider
