I need to find a feed with low to little sugar.

I cannot feed the ultimate balancer because this is bound with molasses, as is all the balancers apparently.

I have rung round for the A&P Sugar Intolerant feed but everyone hase to order in arghhhh!

There must be ppl out there who feed little to NO sugar to their competition horses?

Help

How well does he hold weight V?
If he looks fairly well I would be inclined to try and run him off a fibre diet to be honest, this worked wonders with J when he was up and running. I could event him off grass / haylage and happy hoof ! Any type of mix I found gave him lots of 'impulsion', although he wasn't too bad on fibre cubes.

Saracen horse feeds do a super feed without sugar in it, I think its much better than the A&P one....but then again I suppose it would have to be ordered specially!

Spillers' I've heard does a super high fibre cube which has no sugar in it ( H's mum reccomended this to me- as H cant have sugar)

Also Alfa oil is magic stuff- you can feed it on its own, its very balanced in its vits/mins it has a high energy content but no sugar in it so should not make them go 'wooo!'. very good for weight gain/topline without the fizz. Its the sole diet that Forrest was on as he was completly unable to digest any form of carbs or sugar and he actually did very well on it considering that he was prone to looking like a runt! You only need to feed a mineral supp with it ( say seaweed and rock salt) and youv'e got a balanced feed. You can't give them more than 3/4 scoops a day of it though.

Also top spec's feed balancer is great- am pretty certain it has very little/no molasses in it at all....

Spillers Mollasses Free is supposed to be good - am thinking of trying my TB on it.... Outshine is mollasses free too, I feed it with oats, chaff and a low sugar mix at the mo - its worked a treat!

Thanks a lot guys.
B&J yes have considered running him off nothing. ATM our grass is pretty basic due to sheep having been on it all winter so a alfa/happy hoof diet may work.

Just spoke to D&H and they think its the Build Up cubes and have said continue along with ultimate balancer route.
It takes 6 wks for this reaction to get out of his system apparently.

Im still keen on doing the exclusion diet. Apparently D&H are bringing out a new NO sugar feed also.

Hes is sane and sensible, holds weight pretty well, although going into winter he dropped considerably.

ATM hes a good weight, so perhaps now is time to do an exclusion diet?

Thanks for your help guys, youve now given me some ideas, SN yes outshine was one i was thinking of and Bailey Low Cal too. When i spoke to a feed merchant friend he said that all pelleted/balancers are bound together with molasses tho = however, now thinking about it, snoop has been on UB since ive had him and its only since he was having the build up cubes that he started to have the lumps.....
Forrest this may be a good diet for him to go on whilst we get his system clear.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like you are nearly sorted then hun. I was gonna put B on the Outshine, but I've done it the cheaper way and made my own! I happened to have a bag of Soya Bean Meal (as ya do like pmsl), so I bought a big bag of linseed pellets. She is picking up nicely too - she's on AA Oil and TS Cool conditioning flakes (untill the bag finishes!). She also gets Alfabeet, though she has to have this in a seperate bucket as she simply will not touch her feed if it's mixed in - strange child

Avoid Happy Hoof - despite being approved by the Laminitis Trust, it's got lots of sugar in it. On the process of elimination method, it was at the root of my boy's troubles (it was the thing I least believed to be the cause of his behaviour). Can I suggest the following to you?

D&H Fibergy for the Chaff
Fibrebeet (same company as speedibeet) Alfalfa/UM beet
Spillers Hi Fibre Cubes

Be very careful if you stick with standard pony nuts. My boy can cope with Scats own brand, but the other local feed merchants own brand are produced by a different manufacturer and send him evil again. Good luck, but trust me, you won't believe the diference once you have got him away from the sugar. From the mad scary beastie, I now have a very affectionate and lovable pony.

Thank you everyone.

Right the route I have gone...

Hi Fi Lite
Soya Oil
General Purpose Supplement
Water

He will now stay on that for the time being.
If he needs any energy I will pop some oats into the feed. But he should run well off the oil.

Once all things have settled I will end up using straights instead. Will try unmolassed sugar beet but stay away from cubes as i didnt realise they were all bound in sugar.

Hi Bbs
Spillers Highfibre cubes are fab! Use that with an dengie alpha (make sure it's the hifi lite or oil or alphalite - as some of the others do have some sugar in them to bind) and oil - I'm not a fan of soya oil as I've heard that this can irritate gastric ulcers/problems so I play it safe and use alternative oils like ExSelenium!

Ed is on the A&P Intollerence. He was originally on this plus soya oil.
I have since changed the soya oil for Baileys Outshine and he now has a lot more energy without him getting silly in the slightest. Really rate the product.
