Hi guys

I am using the 24hour sugar beet pellets. At the moment he is only getting Sugarbeet in the evening but I want to give him it in his breakfast too. I can only go up to the yard in the evening.
My question is could I leave a tub of sugar beet to soak say on a friday evening so then by saturday evening it will be fully soaked (24hour) but then on sat evening mix it in a breakfast bowl with the rest of his food and leave it for the Yard Owner to feed him on sunday morning or will it go off?

Hi - no i feed sugar beet - it should be absolutely fine. Well, at least i have found absolutely no probelm. I never use anything more than 2 days soaked though. It goes all sticky and horrid, and then i would consider that to be off!

Hope this helpful

Oh - i also cover mine when soaking just in case anything goes in it

Thanks for your replies, I thought it would be ok but its my first time feeding Sugar Beet.
Do you think it would be ok to mix it into his feed in the evening with the rest of his breakfast and leave it sitting overnight?

I dont think that would hurt, I mix my evening feeds in the morning and put in stable covered ready for the evening, its fine, I also soak enough sugar beet in one large bucket to last all the horses 2 days at a time, however i use speedibeet so it soaks for less time

Yep that will be fine, thats what they do at my yard (apart from in the very hot summer months) it will be fine for 2 days as long as there isnt extreme headt (highly unlikley right now!)

If sugarbeet does go off due to heat etc, it develops like a vinegary smell, very different to when its ok. Usually keeps well in the winter (though sometimes freezes!!) but warmer weather makes it turn quicker. Hope that helps

In the winter i used to soak my sugar beet with boiling water as i needed it, stand 15/20 mins then use, gave the horses a nice hot breakfast, they used to enjoy it as well, i did this for years and never had any problems doing it this way.
It was a tip i picked up when working in the army stables years ago.

i once left sugarbeet soaked from friday eve until sun eve i think it was and it had a kinda grey hairy covering and smelt extremely sickly, that was early summer time... needless to say i threw it away.

Yep if it's off it has a kind of fermented smell to it like my Dad's home made wine, brings back childhood memories!

It should keep for a couple of days this time of year but will soften quicker with warm water if you need it sooner. As a guide it should be ready when it's had time to cool and no lumps left.

In the summer Sugarbeet only lasts about 24 hours if that but in the winter mine will keep going for 4/5 days. It thives better being colder. I do not feed it in the summer because of this hassle and my horse much prefers normal sugarbeet because its sweeter than speedibeet. You can tell if it has gone off first of all its smells like gone off beer where it has fermented and it also gets white mould.
