Hi!
I'd really like to have some advices from you! I have a lovely thorughbread and I want to somministrate to him something to preserve his stomach health. I know thoroughbreads are very frail in that part and I'm givin' him GNF from TRM Ireland. It' very expensive and it created for horses with problems like ulcers. He soesn't have this kind of problem, I just want to prevent it... any suggestions?

And also: what about joint supplements? which one do you think is the best?

Than you!!

The best thing for stomach health is constant eating. A horse is designed to eat pretty conctantly, because they cannot stop producing acid in their stmach. This means that a horse who stands for long periods of time without food is more likely to get ulcers.
So if he is standing in his stable for any length of time, make sure he has hay.
Also, feed a forage based diet for hard feed. Like chaff and sugarbeet, unmollased obviously. Have you heard of simple systems feeds? All forage based and horses seem to like it. They also do a range of supplements too.
If you can help it, dont feed grains. Like cool mix or cubs etc. Grainst are not natural for horses and take longer to digest. This is why you cant ride a horse for an hour after a grain feed, but you can ride a horse straight of grass or hay. Forage keeps things moving. Grainst and legumes slow things down.
If you think he may have problems with ulcers, try gastry x. Ive heard very good things about it and thats its very efective. But really, i think the best thing for horses is a constant forage based diet.

Hopefully you can provide him with this as i feel its the best thing for all horses.
Best of luck

For stomachs I'd go with Global Herbs Acid X, its fantastic stuff and for joints Aviform suppleaze gold is really effective and they usually have a 3 for 3 offer on so reasonably priced too!

I've just ordered my first pot of Cortaflex, the science behind it seems logical, and many people have said it's fab! (but as with everything some people don't like it!). can't help yu out much with the stomach problems, but my TB is out 24/7 and seems happy enough (better for their joints too!) :) xxxx

I would second the constant eating and fibre based diet rather than cereals. My horse is on simple systems feed, just lucie nuts and grass nuts and he looks well, keeps on (not an easy feat), and is much more settled. i tried loads of conditioning feeds in the past but they all made him fizzy and he couldn't have the recommended amounts. Now he can have huge buckets of feed which takes him longer to eat (he sometimes goes back for more several times rather than eating all at once). I also give him pink powder as a general vit/min supplement which also supports the gut. It definately works well for him as he gets loads to eat and also has enough energy to event without being too fizzy.
