One of my horses was diagnosed with some mild arthritic changes in her hocks last year.

I made a claim on my insurance for it which is all fine. The insurance company allowed me to have 4 tubs of joint supplement that the vets prescribed (equi4s joint 4s).

I am just about to use the last of the fourth one and as there are very expensive I was wondering if anyone knew of any other good supplements that they have had positive results with and that they could recommend? or do I just keep going with the equi4s ?!

Thank you if you can help :-)

Here at Baily's Hunting Directory we have had Maxavita on test for about a month (human equine and canine variants) - I need to write up the product review soon but in summary we have been very very impressed with it, and the effect its had on a retired thoroughbreds joints. Hope that helps

Honestly, for my spaviney chap I found none of them really made any appreciable difference.

What has made a diffrerence is getting his shoes off (less concussion) and Linseed Meal - the Charnwood variety at £24 for 20Kg. I give him a tea mug each feed. It surprised me that it made such a difference, I certainly noticed the few weeks when he didn't have it.

I know you say it's expensive, but are you also suggesting that you haven't noticed any improvement with equi4s?

Try googling Riaflex - it has very similar propertied to Chrondrin (available from the vet) and has made a real difference to my boy.

no I haven't noticed any improvement (sorry i forgot to mention that in OP!)

I really don't mind buying her an expensive supplement if it helped her, but it seems a waste if I could be buying her something else that did help.

If only horses could talk and tell us what they think, it would be so much easier.....!!

I second linseed meal and I know of a couple of owners who have had success with giving tumeric. Apparently you can get it at Asian stores cheaply in bulk.

I am currently using GWF joint aid plus for my horse as a preventative measure rather than because he has issues. This means its difficult for me to say if it is working but the ingredients list includes all the things that after a bit of internet research I feel are needed in a joint supplement. All the obvious like Glucosamine, HA, Chondroitin and msm but also Curcumin. Curcumin is a type of tumeric which has been shown to be very beneficial in helping athiritis (sp). That said, a fellow livery has had excellent results with Maxaflex from Maxavita for her 22 year old pony and 11 year old dressage horse that have both been diagnosed with athritic changes.

my mare was diagnosed with arthitis in the hocks about 2 yrs ago - i went through the gamut of expensive/quite expensive/very expensive suppplements - ii cant say i saw any very appreciable difference - what has really helped has been moving her to 24/7 turnout/keeping her weight down & her work load constant & a daily gloop of tumeric

Apart from a joint supplement have you thought of using magnetic boots. I know several people who have used them and have had great results. My friend uses them overnight when her mare had had a lot of work and it really helps her.

Good luck x
