Need to put my lad on some hard feed as he has rapidly started to lose condition.
I had to covert him from Haylage to Hay due to the Haylage fizzing him up.

I was considering TopSpec Comprehensive Balancer but its very expensive and not in my budget for now.
I want something that will put condition and weight on him (and as an optional extra give him a lovely shiny coat!)

I'm looking at nuts/mixes at the moment but if there's any good cheap balancers I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks :)

D&H Suregrow is a good balancer and half the price of most balancers according to my feed merchant. Designed for youngstock and broodmares, but only about £15 for 20kg rather than £30 for the D&H ultimate balancer! There's a full analysis on the D&H website. :)

Fibre for bulk something like speedibeet or alphabeet or soaked grass nuts, a general supplement and then cheap supermarket oil for calories and coat shine! (:

Thank you for your suggestions everyone, I'm looking now!
I'll also look at Pure Feeds, Kat as I've herd good things.

I've seen Dodson & Horrel Build Up Cubes and they look quite promising, anyone had any experience with this feed?
:)

I've never heard of linseed heating a horse up. I put a mugful in each feed so you would prob want to add something else as well rather than feeding it on its own.

i dont understand why he has lost the weight, do you think its just the change from haylage to hay?

how old is he?

what work does he do?

has his work changed lately?

is he his normal self in every other way?

whats his turn out like/has it changed?

what breed?

how old is he?

how long have you had him?

has he had his teeth checked in last 6months?

Would it be fine to feed with some Conditioning Cubes and Chaff? (-:

You certainly could yes but I'm not a big fan of conditioning cubes, personally I'd just feed linseed and chaff. I'm feeding my skinny new boy oats and linseed and he's looking really well on it.

He is 10, Thoroughbred (Ex-racehorse), Nothing has changed like work load, turnout etc.
I've had him approx 4 months now.
He is in Light/Medium work. He is his normal self.
Had his teeth checked and rasped 2/3 months ago.

I think it could be the change from Haylage to Hay but his hips and ribs are starting to become visible and he's lost quite a bit of weight around his neck. He's being rugged at night now too.

I will give him a try on it and see how he goes.
Quite baffled to how he has lost weight at the drop of a hat.
