Horse is blue and white. The grey part of the mane is quite thick and strong but the white part is thin and a portion has rubbed out completely. I've taken the neck off the rug now. I had been keeping an eye on it but it happened almost overnight.
I've seen a few products on the market for strengthening/thickening but, as I've not been in this situation before, does anyone have any recommendations please.

This is interesting - after a friend was over-keen with the clippers ( ) I've spent the last two years trying to persuade the hole in my cob's mane to grow back. I'd never thought about it before, but it's the white bit that has been problematic. The black bit grew back in much faster.

Sadly I have not found anything to speed up the process, except gentle brushing and the use of conditioner to stop the new hair snapping off. I tried Shapley's MTG but it just stank and gave him dandruff. I've gone through so much mane and tail conditioner that I make my own now - a big slug of fractionated coconut oil, cheap human coconut conditioner, a splash of apple cider vinegar and then top up with water in a spray bottle and shake.

Gold Label Wondergel is meant to be good to help regrowth of hair. I’ve also seen a brand ‘Neighkid’ that does a regrow type serum. It’s expensive and I haven’t used it personally. I know Rosemary oil is said to have thickening properties for hair. Maybe supplementing Biotin?

Neck rugs are the killers of manes! I like a tidy, neat mane so my horse (dainty Arab) only has one on in the very worst weather, i just make sure his rug is toasty warm. Remember, neck rugs are a fairly recent addition, so horses have managed without them a long time

I use this with success

Thanks. I too will only be using necks in the worst weather from now on. Better to have a muddy mane than no mane!

Thanks for the replies.
Will definitely have a look at a biotin supplement.
Also like the idea of coconut oil. I used to use it on my own hair.
