Just after some opinions - I'm off on a weeks holiday in October and I'm planning on asking somebody at my yard to look after my horse while I'm away (she will be more than willing & will be at the yard anyway so won't need to make any special journey's) but was wondering how much to pay her?
Horse will be out 24/7 so not a huge amount of work involved, will just need the usual daily checks, will need to be given a feed once a day, will need field poo picked but at her convenience, & no rugging involved.
I was thinking £5 per day or is that a bit stingy???

I'd add my £10 per horse meant my friend got £20 a day and there are some savings with doing 2 that mean it's not quite the same time as 2 x 1 horse. I agree it's worth paying something a bit meaningful to reward someone trustworthy because as Rowreach says it's more than just doing the chores, it's the general thing about them being responsible for the horses while you aren't there.

I pay £10 a visit for trusted friend, or £15 a visit if its trusted travelling groom. Both are people I'm happy to leave in charge. One trip away 3 yrs ago and groom cheerfully poulticed one which came out with an abscess the day before I went away.
That's to either skip out or poo pick, check over and mini feed a 14hh and a mini shetland.
Total time involved is max 30 mins, can be done in 15.

Ok thanks all, seems like £10 is more like it so I'll gladly pay that - even though she said she'd do it for nothing, bless her!!!

Perhaps offer £10 and check if she’d rather do it for nothing so you return the favour when she is away. Then you can just get her something small to say thanks and do a week for her in future.

I had a friend check my ponies while we were away abroad, they were happily living out. First day away, one jumped out, she had never done this before, so my friend had to move her and keep her in over night, the whole time we were away, as the field she jumped out of she could have got on to the road.
Fortunately she knew these things happen. She had left her FIL in charge of the kids pony, a Shetland, it got out, he couldn't find it rang around no luck, this is before FB. When she got home, there was a piece in the local paper, that Wood Green had a stray Shetland!
