My mum's horse has been 'not quite right' since about May. He was never lame, just a bit stiff didn't feel quite even. As he often does stuff messing around in the field we dont instantly call the vet (I would be broke, and he would be at the yard every other day) we gave him the standard 2 weeks off then brought him slowly back into work and seemed to be going okay. He was possibly a bit stiff but it is winter here and quite cold (he is only 9). Till we tried jumping again. He was noticably stiff the day afterwards, though he was jumping fine.

So as rest wasn't working we have since had the Vet (one of the best horse vets in Syd), phisio and chiropracter out. All of whom can give us a long list of what is NOT wrong, but no one can say what IS.

The general consencus is that it is in his rear (conflicing opinions on which side), high up, possibly quite deep (muscle wise) and is affecting the rest of his back as he compensates for it. Not caused by the saddle. Probably as a result of messing around in the field. Everyone recomended that we keep him moving so no box rest.

Now if any one has ever had a similar sounding problem in the past I would love to hear what you did/ how long it took the horse to be 100% again.

Failing that lots of get well vibes please! I (we) want to go for a good gallop! And I am fed up with trying to keep to a walk on an 16 (going on 18)hh idiot. =)

Thanks! Choc. pudding round!

Pulled muscles can take ages to recover, especially if he is still looning about in the field, therefore possibly pulling already weak muscle again!!

Can he go into a smaller resting paddock, maybe with a quiet companion?

{{{ VIBES }}} for him and hope your galloping across the fields soon!!

Like Lippyx said, muscle damage can take such a long time to heal. My big horse injured himself (we decided it was a shoulder muscle tear) out crosscountrying and wsan't particularly lame but started to stop which he never does so we knew there was something.
Vets etc weren't sure, I tried unsuccessfully to bring him back into work many times after field rest and EVENTUALLY 2 years after it all began and probably about 9months doing nothing he came back ok. I had to build up his confidence loose jumping him but touch wood he hasn't had this problem since. He is 16 now and this was as a 6 year old.
It's so frustrating not knowing exactly what it is so I really feel for you. Loads of vibes

Thanks for the vibes / comments! Hope fully it won't take 2 years! And I can't restrict his movement anymore with out shutting him in...which would just create a time bomb! =/

The vet actually called back (of his own volition) and said that having talked to his collegues, he thinks we should try an injection of Cortisone (steriods) (this was suggested originally but he wasnt sure if it was worth it) to help reduce swelling which should help the muscle heal (assuming it is a muscle). And wil return to give the injection tomorrow FREE of charge (well except for the drug) as he is going just down the road any way. Which I think is VERY nice of him!! But then I haven't got the invoice for the 1st visit yet =/

Beau has been a bit better the last few days, so hopefully we are on the road to recovery!
